Free Music Notes for Motherland

Free Music Review: Natalie moves further away from mainstream pop
Hit: 5 Stars

Natalie Merchant is an incredible songwriter, and the songwriting on Motherland doesn't disappoint. Ms. Merchant's voice is incredibly emotive and moving, and she manages the sound without seeming too forceful or without trying "too hard". Not In This Life is my favorite track on this album, however, there aren't any that I typically skip when I put it into my cd player. Music lovers with a taste for well written songs and distinctive vocals will appreciate this departure from the world of generally shallow, hollow female pop singers.

Free Music Review: Stimulating
Hit: 5 Stars

Have you ever seen those documentaries that show a rat doing some little trick so as to get pleasure stimuli sent down electrodes implanted in its brain, repeating the trick again and again until it finally collapses? Well, fellow Natalie fans, I put on Motherland and became the rat once more. I listened and felt waves of ecstasy wash over my aural pleasure center. I'm compelled to play it till I collapse. Mercy. My wife wants me to do some chore. No sweat; just put on my electrodes, er I mean my Natalie music.

Free Music Review: That Unmistakable Voice
Hit: 5 Stars

Natalie delivers another great performance on Motherland. I have always loved Natalie's voice and on Motherland she uses it in ways I'm not sure SHE even knew she could. From the incredibly rich "This House is on Fire" to the simple, yet powerful title track "Motherland", Natalie will keep you mesmerized through all 12 tracks.

This is a refreshing break from the awful pop, rock and rap that dominates today's Top-40 and a must for any 10,000 Maniacs and Natalie Merchant fan.

Free Music Review: Exceptional third album from Natalie
Hit: 5 Stars

It's so disheartening to know that Britney Spears, rap, Usher, etc, are ruling the charts when an immensely talented artist like Natalie can barely sell 500,000 copies anymore. Motherland is, as far as I'm concerned, Natalie's best work to date. The music doesn't follow her traditional piano ballad formula. The songs are all unique and have some amazing lyrics. My favourite songs are This House is on Fire, Saint Judas, Golden Boy, Just Can't Last and I'm Not Gonna Beg.

Free Music Review: Natalie Succeeds again!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I personally like all of Natalie's albums. She is very poetic and deep. I give all of her albums 5 stars together. Motherland is great! I especially like Tell Yourself because it is speaking to all those teeny boppers, junior high girls who need a reality check. Most of her songs wouldn't even need the music because the lyrics could be read like poetry without a pause. She is talented as a songwriter and a muscian, and she doesn't get nearly enough recognition...
