Free Music Review: Natalie Merchant is born to sing
Hit: 5 Stars

First, I would like to state from the very beginning that I had never heard of Natalie Merchant before, NEVER. I'm a Jazz fan and sometimes listening to classical music. I don't listen to pop and rock much. This is just a personal taste of mine, with due respects for other forms of music. However, I'm an audiophile and always keeping an eye out for good music and good sound, especially the newer formats such as Super audio cd and DVD audio.

One day out of the blue in the music store, I saw the Natalie Merchant "Tigerlily" DVD audio, so I decided to pick up the Tigerlily DVD audio as well as the regular cd version to compare to see whether DVD audio is worth the fuss.

Well, to make the long story short, I didn't find any significant differences between the DVD audio and the regular version; however, the Tigerlily cd blew me away. Natalie's voice is so soft and innocent. She just sings naturally and doesn't try to "impress" the audience with dynamics, speeds, vocal ranges, ad libs, embellishments etc, etc. This is as good as it get from any talented singer folks. I would listen to her over any Britney Spears or the like any time, any day (again, with due respects). To tell you the true, sometimes I don't even know what she is singing about, but I don't care. After that, I became a fan and purchased the Ophelia [HDCD] as well. The recording in this one is even better. I don't like that picture with the cigarette in the mouth, it ruins the innocence of it, but that's beside the point. Truly 5 stars.

Free Music Review: Don't pay attention to the critics...
Hit: 5 Stars

For anyone who is considering picking up Natalie Merchant's "Ophelia" but isn't sure, having heard one critic too many label her pretentious or gloomy, I just want to throw in my two bits and tell you to ignore them! This CD is wonderful, I picked it up last summer on a whim and still really enjoy it. I didn't have "Tigerlily," her first solo release, and ended up buying them in reverse order so that I could have more of Natalie's music! I don't think it's fair to say one is better than the other, they are both good CDs, different and yet quite similar... I think on "Ophelia" she is branching out a bit more and trying some new things, and good for her! "Frozen Charlotte" stands out as my favorite song, among other great tracks like "Break Your Heart," "The Living," and "When They Ring the Golden Bells." "Life Is Sweet" is also wonderful and really lifts my mood each time I hear it. I am so tired of my friends saying, "Natalie Merchant, well, she's okay but I just don't like her personality. She is SOOO serious, she needs to lighten up." Actually, anyone who has seen an interview with Ms. Merchant should be able to see how BENEVOLENT, QUIRKY, and BEAUTIFUL she is!! She makes music because she enjoys it, and she IS an artist. I am going to see her in concert next month, and I am so excited! I can't wait to see her dance around on stage like the previous reviewer mentioned, hehe.

Free Music Review: A great Christmas gift to buy!
Hit: 5 Stars

Natalie's 1998 release, "Ophelia" broke the Top Ten in its debut week. Yes, many of the songs are dark, depressing, but oh so beautiful. I'll give a run down on each song:

Ophelia - very cool - kinda new age sounding. great lyrics

Life is Sweet - beautiful ballad about a girl who's troubles will go away if she keeps thinking positively.

Kind and Generous - Fun song to listen to. Natalie thanks all her fans in this song.

Frozen Charlotte - probably one of my favorites from this album. Great piano work on this song.

My Skin. - about a woman who has cancer and wants her husband to make love to her one last time.

Break Your Heart - song written for the twenty-something generation. "Don't think everybody is gonna choose your side" is the best lyric in this song.

King of May - ode dedicated to Allen Ginsberg

Thick as Thieves - my favorite song off this album. Great guitar work at the end by Daniel Lanois.

Effigy - a Tibetian funeral song. it's ok - not my favorite song in this album.

The Living - a beautiful ballad written about a man who wants to commit suicide.

When they Ring the Golden Bells - A great folk song - Natalie's a natural at singing this song.

ALL OF THESE SONGS are great. Go buy it now, you won't be disappointed! Don't listen to the negative reviews because one way or another, all of these songs will make you feel what Natalie is feeling.
