Free Music Notes for OpheliaFree Music Review: Can't help enjoying it. Hit: 5 Stars
I am aware of the disc's shortcomings but still I can't help enjoying it. I feel a bit weird - a big man (see my photo) writing of his infatuation with that womanly soul-caressing stuff. And I am a bit allergic to the singer - I own the Ophellia concert DVD and hate Natalie's mannerisms and her body language, all that barefooted hippieish "dancing". But as an opera fan I have ho problem with separating a voice from a personality. I was amused listening to the Russian phrases in the title song - they were included as the World Music-style weird language cameos but I understood. The CD package is better to be thrown away - to get the disc out you have to be very careful avoiding putting your fingerprints on the surface. And this idiotic narcissist's photo-gallery imposing on you much more Ms.Merchant's images that you care to see! So I put the disc in a standard unmarked package and listen to it more often than I am ready to admit.
Free Music Review: It Won't Break Your Heart... Hit: 5 Stars
Merchant returned to true form with this album. I for one did not care for the midle of the road pop tunes on her debut disc, Tigerlily, and was genuinely impressed by her sophomore effort.Ophelia is a model album, and although it does delve into dark and somewhat contemplative thought, it's soul is spirit-lifting. From the haunting and all-encompassing title track to the eerily anachronistic remake of an 1887 song (When they ring the Golden Bells), Natalie is at home in the material.Unfortunately for Merchant, her chief single from this album was the throwaway pop track "Kind and Generous." The far superior single "Break Your Heart" was largely ignored, and it is a pity for it had lush trumpets, beautiful rhythums, and Merchant's warbling voice to ease between the notes. Flip in this CD for an evening of enjoyment! While it admittedly can be less than inspiring at times, Ophelia is a maserfully crafted album.
Free Music Review: The Most Beautiful Album This Year!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I was unfamiliar with "Ophelia" until I attended Lilith Fair this past summer. I had the opportunity to meet Natalie before her show and was indeed excited to see her performance. I was blown away. I bought the CD the next day. The way she presents this music is nothing less than vocal art. Few singers have the ability to transcend into other realms of being when they perform. However, Natalie is one person that does. "Life is Sweet" is an anthem for times of both sorrow and joy. The title track, "Ophelia," creates a scene so vivid to the imagination, one feels as though the characters are standing before him. And "Kind and Generous" is perhaps one of the most heartfelt and beautiful songs ever written. This album dedicated to the life and artistry of Beatnik poet Allen Ginsberg is a must buy. Experience the art that is "Ophelia" for yourself!
Free Music Review: An album worthy of Merchant's reputation! Hit: 5 Stars
Critics may say what they want, bottomline is their illiterate arrogance. They rather put porno teen stars in their cover, rather read, research and discover.Miss Merchant's Ophelia album, distinctive, unique and independent from being 10,000 maniacs, proved that she can and she has gift of a real artist and a poet. Lyrics of her song either sang or read has context, depth and meaning, compare to Emily Dickenson,Chomsky,Ginsberg, but she will humbly be Natalie. Miss Merchant's works are threat to mainstream media, because it defies their voracity for ignorance, arrogance, violence and greed. They rather see and jubilate for "artist" lip singing, dance and strip, mash pitting, stampeding and cursing. They want us to like who they like and admire who they write. Fortunately we know and we know what we want,if they can sing, write like Natalie I dare to challenge thee!
Free Music Review: This album is a religous experience. Hit: 5 Stars
Natalie is a genius. Her brilliance shines through in this record. One of the greatest lyricists ever, the stories on Ophelia are beautifully written and the music accompanying her words on this album create such an apt atmosphere that I drown in every song upon every listening. Once again, her unique voice is enthralling and the backgound vocals of Karen Paris and N'Dea Davenport are gorgeous. Natalie is continually evolving. She never ceases to impress me and this album is no exception. I recommend this album to anyone who can recognize both talent and passion. Natalie has something special in her that breaks my heart and makes me weak and tremble. Also, if you ever get the chance to see her perform, take it. Even if you don't like her music, she's an incedible performer of the rarest caliber. Submerge yourself in her world, in Ophelia. You won't regret it.
