Free Music Review: Best artist going
Hit: 5 Stars

First of all, the Amazon review was ridiculous. The album may be a bit dark, but what of it? It is entertaining, and there is not a bad track on it. Miss Merchant deals with some rather profound issues, with a positive message. How many artists today do you hear sing about how sweet life is, no matter what your circumstances or what other people say? The songs on this album are weighty, but without bogging down.

Above all, the album is entertaining and enjoyable, which is the true standard by which artists work should be judged. Natalie Merchant has the three things needed for enjoyable music. She has the best voice in pop music. The music itself is very good. The lyrics are meaningful.

I have a 5 CD changer by my bed. It is loaded with 5 Natalie Merchant CD's (going back to 10000 Maniacs). Her album work is great, and she is even better in concert!

Free Music Review: art, exposed
Hit: 5 Stars

This Cd has been sitting in my case for exactly 2 years now that it is may again. I pulled it out again today. Wow. I guess I just wasn't ready for it 2 years ago. This is pretty intense album, in my opinion. Intense in terms of feeling. The reason i never got it before was maybe because the first few songs are misleading--they are much more uppity than the rest of the album. Like kind and generous, which is rather a bland song. But, beyond the surface, this album is nothing like Tigerlily (which bored me) or Sarah McLauchlin (who bores me). Really experimental things are on this album. Its great. I don't recommend it for people who are looking for pop. Surprisingly, this album has a lot of levels, it is as good as an old maniacs album (mmmm, like the wishing chair) For people who are looking for a real art form, i recommend that you get this album

Free Music Review: Natalie creates a land mark album--Her best yet
Hit: 5 Stars

If there was any doubt that Merchant will stand along side the all time greats like Dylan and The Beatles, it is dispelled with this album. With a deftness found only in the best poets and songwriters, she crafts songs who's lyrical beauty is matched only by the glowing, felicitous tones that surround them. Ophella buys into none of the nonsense of a rapidly atrophying music business. No artifical rhythm tracks, no "dabbling in techno", just real, honest songs. Honesty. It's something in short supply these days. Compare the heart-wrenching "My Skin" to the silly "Hands" by Jewell (if I could tell the world just one thing, it would be:we're all ok !?!?) But every word, ever note of these songs ring true. By any fair estemation, a good disc. In my opinion, one of the best albums of the 1990's.

Free Music Review: A Beautiful, Beautiful Album
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this album back when it was first released, and I still listen to it quite frequently. It represents the full maturity of Natalie Merchant as a songwriter -- someone unashamed to address even the most weighty of topics, and to combine haunting lyrics with enchanting melodies to produce amazingly beautiful music. I've listened to "Life is Sweet" maybe 1,000 times, and it never gets old. Those who say Ms. Merchant should lighten up, or do more songs like "Ring their Golden Bells" (which was possibly the only superficial song in the album), are not appreciating the depth of Natalie Merchant's poetry put to music. This is not the pathetic, generic pop music that allows Britney Spears and In Sync to get a few minutes in the spotlight before the next short-lived sensation hits the airwaves. This is a true work of art.

Free Music Review: Beautiful Soul- Caressing Melodies
Hit: 5 Stars

Natalie Merchant's Ophelia is a haunting collection of near-depressing music. However, the sadder it is, the more it urges you to listen to it. My Skin draws your very essence out and no matter who you are you can associate some aspect of your life with it's sad yet beautiful words. After listening to many current albums, I have established that Natalie Merchant's Ophelia has the most meaningful words, and doesn't focus on boring, overused cliches like love, sex, and violence. The use of Tibetan singer Yungchen Lhamo in Effigy encompasses many different aspects of music all at once, I prefer not to read the translation of the words, because it adds a more ethereal quality to the song. Ophelia is the album for anyone whose taste in music lies in non-repetetiveness, creativity and spiritual beauty.
