Free Music Notes for OpheliaFree Music Review: pure passion Hit: 5 Stars
when i first received "ophelia" one year ago, i had just finished my junior year of high school, and my mom bought me this cd to celebrate. well, it's not exactly a celebratory cd, but i put it on anyway, having heard "kind and generous" on the radio. i was blown away. natalie is a musical genius. the reprise of "ophelia" evokes all of my emotions, while "life is sweet" just constantly reaffirms my faith that all of this is worth it. "king of may" is haunting and moody, and "kind and generous" is just an unabashed outpouring of gratitude. perhaps best is "frozen charlotte" which can lull you to sleep with its seductive lyrics and guitar composition. i would like to thank ms. merchant for making this splendid album
Free Music Review: OPHELIA Hit: 5 Stars
NATALIE MERCHANT's OPHELIA is one of the most lyrically cohesive CD's in popular music today. It features guest vocalists and an incomparable instrumental accompaniment. OPHELIA spans the gamut of joyous celebration to the depths of alienation and depression. The title track tells of a woman who seeks validation in external realities, from politics to romance--only to be left wandering alone in the corridors of her mind. My Skin describes human sensitivity that has been denied beyond the point of endurance. This theme is emphasized in Effigy in which the persona is equated to social self-immolation. Tibetan born Yungchen Lhamo whose cameo sends shivers up the charkas.

Free Music Review: Natalie is one in a million Hit: 5 Stars
I have to say that Ophelia is one of the most original albums I've heard in a long while. It seems like the airwaves have been innundated with so much similar sounding stuff ("staind or nickelback"?, "green day or alien ant farm"?). while I enjoy the music from these similar sounding artists, when you hear Natalie's stuff, you can be sure it's Natalie Merchant and no other. The songs just seem to connect and flow so fluidly and subtlely with all the smooth drum backbeats and Graham Maby's exquisite bass lines. A true chill out album. Put this album on while you're driving on a long stretch of empty road (preferably with little or no other cars, preferably at night) and you tell me how you feel. A most pleasant way to wind down your day. Keep it up Natalie!
Free Music Review: A fantastic album Hit: 5 Stars
I have only two gripes with Ophelia. 1) There's not much as far as variety. 2) Effigy is bad.Having said that, I really enjoy this CD. It's a solid offering that showcases her voice as well has her writing talents. While variety is nice, it's not what she obviously intended and I prefer to look at the CD based on what it is rather than what I want to see. I've noticed a lot criticize it for not being what they would have done. I especially like Life Is Sweet, My Skin and The Living. The duets (if you can call them that) with Karen Peris are very good also. I could do without Effigy, though. If I wanted to hear a Tibetan woman try to screech out a song I would go to Tibet. Even so, it's not enough to dim my enthusiasm for this album, which is my first by Merchant.
Free Music Review: An album to keep and treasure Hit: 5 Stars
This one is a keeper; I think of it whenever the time honored question comes up as to what I would bring to a desert island. Anything but pretentious and gloomy Natalie is an inspired singer/songwriter with an angelic voice that haunts and a knack for making personal observations come across as universal truths relatable to any listener who is tired of shrieking divas ala Mariah, Whitney, Celine and the odious, overmarketed J.Lo. This album is soulful without being overbearing and sad only in so far as depth of feeling is bound to be heavy. Life is Sweet is my favorite track and has become almost something of a personal anthem. If Natalie is performing in a town near you take the time to see her: in live performances she is accomplished, graceful and memorable.
