Free Music Review: Voice of the Year 2007
Hit: 5 Stars

I have first heard of Ne-Yo less than 10 days ago when I saw 3 or so videos on MTV Japan. The songs melodies sound very familiar and relaxing. Ne-Yo's songs have a nice variety of a Soul, Hip-Hop style blends which comes like the musik from the 80's / 90's.

I havent bought CD's in a loooong time, but after I heard "Because of You", "Sexy Love" "Sign Me Up" "I Ain't Gotta Tell You" I just couldnt help it and got both his CD's.

Since they arrived a day later they are running up and down in our house. Ne-Yo's music is the kind of which is suitable for just about everywhere, anytime.

Its perfect for background music in a cafe or when doing the shopping, on the road, in the waiting room, before you hit the club, or when going to a party or just when you want to have a dinner for 2, in the bedroom, on the toilet, at your neighbours place ... you get the idea .. it just fits and sticks wherever you put it. ;-)

I personally like his album "In My Own Words" slightly better than his new one but both are very acceptable to listen to.

If you are not sure yet if the CD's are worth it, listen to the downloads.

I would be VERY surprised if Ne-Yo is NOT a major act for 2007.
- THIS is an amazingly relaxing groove Ne-Yo is driving and his voice is doing the rest.

All thumbs up !!

Free Music Review: Simply Perfection!
Hit: 5 Stars

Please don't listen to any of these negative comments! This 2nd album is better than his 1st, and I loved his 1st album. NE-YO is on another level period! The WRITING, PRODUCTION, AND VOCALS HARMONIES are great across the board! The best R&B album out in 2007 so far. He has some new "neyo" Prince/Michael Jackson/80's sound. I love every track but, my personal top 3 are: CRAZY; SEX WITH MY EX; ANGEL.

Free Music Review: 3 1/2 Stars 4 Effort but Definitely not as Good as his Debut
Hit: 3 Stars

Ne-Yo coming back with his sophomore album "Because of You" in my opinion was a rushed album. If he would've took more time with the album, it would've probably came out stellar just like his debut. The album isn't terrible, but you do hear a lot of Prince-influenced vocals on "Addicted" and another track and that was disappointed because we all know that Ne-yo is original and some of that was missing from the album. The album was consistent enough with good tracks, you have to skip around to find them but he'll still pull in his numbers. 3 1/2 Stars...

Standout tracks: "Because of You", "Do You","Leaving Tonight feat. J-Hud, "Work It Out"

Free Music Review: Because of Hype
Hit: 3 Stars

I loved Ne-Yo's first album in fact I agree with users who say it was the R&B album of the year. But now that NeYo has become a household name and put on a level of lyrically savante, I guess the expectations have risen. The second album is no where near as repeat worthy as the first so far for me. Yes it has safe classic R&B rehash of Micheal Jackson like beats but excitement wise its lacking. "Because of you" is catchy and will play in your head over and over and even the Jennifer Hudson duet is likely to be in the rotation of quiet storm radio djs, but the entire feel of the album is not memorable- and only works with a late night groove session after a few drinks and someone else to pay attention to.

Free Music Review: Consistent sophomore effort
Hit: 4 Stars

Ne-Yo burst big onto the R&B scene in 2005 when his second single, "So Sick" managed to be one of R&B and pop's biggest hits of the year. The single hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart the same week the album, IN MY OWN WORDS hit #1 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart with a very impressive 301,000 copies. Not bad for a brand new, fresh recording artist(even though Ne-Yo had been writing songs for other people for years). IN MY OWN WORDS was an exceptional album, hence the Grammy nominations, and you had to wonder what direction the singer-songwriter would take for his quick followup, BECAUSE OF YOU. The answer is he went left of where we expected him to-- this was a risk, but the numbers make us remember or evoke Michael Jackson in his prime, perhaps a comparison we would've never asserted or connected to Ne-Yo based on his debut. With that said, BECAUSE OF YOU is completely different from IN MY OWN WORDS, but it is just as solid and in some ways more fun and more exciting.

The album opens with the mid-tempo dance number, "Because of You". To be honest, I wasn't digging the track before I purchased the album and to make more comparisons, it didn't sell the album for me like "So Sick" sold IN MY OWN WORDS. I just thought it was bland, but after purchasing the album of the same title, I've actually fallen for it more. The groove is nice and has an 80s reminiscent feel that does remind you highly of MJ's dance-pop. It is well written and Ne-Yo modest vocals (which feel a bit looser here) sound great. He may not quite have the pipes of the veterans, but he improves with each successive effort.

If the Michael Jackson reference wasn't enough on "Because of You", "Crazy" featuring Jay-Z resurrects it once again, via Jay-Z's rap verse: "Ne-Yo's like young Michael/I'm Quincy...". "Crazy" definitly doesn't sound like any track from IN MY OWN WORDS, yet it proves to be one of the top tracks Ne-Yo has recorded as of yet. Jay-Z's verse is great, and what is best about it is that it occurs at the onset of the song and that's the only time he raps. The production stands out instantly with bare-bones drum programming supporting Hov and then light (Think MJ "Butterflies" from INVINCIBLE) type production. Another winner in my book. "Can We Chill" turns out to be the third straight consistent number, once again paralleling the consistency of the singer's debut (if you comparing of course). Eric Hudson's soulful sounding production isn't a sample, though it feels like it is 1975 once again -- an anachronism that isn't! Again, Ne-Yo sounds inspired and his vocal performance is among the top echelon of his career.

"Do You" keeps the momentum up as Ne-Yo takes a more subtle approach here. The production once again highlights Ne-Yo's vocals, which here sound more subdued than on "Because of You", "Crazy", or "Can We Chill". Perhaps my qualm about "Do You" is that it feels a bit repetitive. Despite this, it is still top-notch and I enjoy listening to it. "Addicted" is certainly one of Ne-Yo's most adventurous, fun tracks. The brassy production sounds like it should be from R. Kelly's TP3. RELOADED album where Kelly sings, coos, and everything else about his favorite topics- women and sex. Here, Ne-Yo sings "No I am not/ I'm addicted to sex/Girl I guarentee if you lay with me/ there just might be". It certainly makes for one of the funner hooks of 2007.

The Jennifer Hudson featured "Leaving Tonight" is a nice debut performance by Hudson, even if it isn't one of my favorite tracks from BECAUSE OF YOU. Vocally, it could be said that Hudson trumps Ne-Yo here. Most importantly while the songwriting is quite up to the high standard of the first couple of tracks, it presents how much of a force Ms. Hudson will be for the musical world to reckon with when her debut album arrives in the fall. "Ain't Thinking About You" reminds me of IN MY OWN WORDS "Sign Me Up" with the same up-tempo feel. It is another "hot" one that Ne-yo pulls off very well. The background vocals help to sell this track ("I'm gonna, get up, get out, not thinking about you"). "Sex With My Ex" takes a pointer from Diddy's top ten "Last Night" with the robotic drum programming featured in Ne-yo's "Prince" number. "Sex With My Ex" would be much at home from any of Prince's late 1980s or 1990s album when sex was on his "to do list" (no pun intended). Another consisten number. "Angel" and "Make It Work" are solid, though not exceptional, while "Say It" and "Go On Girl" aren't the best of the best, but very good overall.

Essentially, BECAUSE OF YOU is pretty flawless, just like IN MY OWN WORDS. Vocally, Ne-Yo is more playful here as well as more impressive. I sense more Grammy nominations for Ne-yo. Very fine album, 4 stars.
