Free Music Review: Great Debut from Ne-yo!
Hit: 5 Stars

This has to be the best album since I have since I bought the Emancipation of MIMI last year! This is the album of 2006, Ne-yo is extremely multi-talented. The one thing about him that sticks out in my mind the most is that he writes all of his own music, nowadays in the industry you only have people that look good, sing songs, and can dance and that's it, but he has all of it! He is excellent! Now on to this wonderful album.

1. Stay- I loved the song from the get-go, as soon as I heard it I couldn't wait to go get his album that was supposedly coming out in november, unfortunately it got pushed back a few months, but it was worth the wait, definately one of my favorites on the album. 5/5

2. Let me get this right- I really wish this was the next single, instead of When you're mad. This song has so much potential. The production on the track is awesome! Definately one of the top songs on the album. 5/5

3. So Sick- I am sure that everyone has heard this song. This is Ne-yo's signiture track. That pushed him to stardom. I heard this song before it was released on the radio, and I knew for a fact that it would do great. And raching # 6 on the charts I was correct. He turned a song about a horrible relationship into a song that we all love and recognize. Great song! 4/5

4. When you're mad- Even though this is the next single, I don't think it is a good choice. Not saying that it isn't a good song, but they're are so many more songs on the album that has way more potential than this song. Not my favorite, but a great song nevertheless. 4/5

5. It Just Ain't Right- I love this song! It's so melodic and the production is so catchy and great! Not the best on the album, but nevertheless a great song! Very catchy! 5/5

6. Mirror- This song is so grown! And sexy, this is absolutely like the 3rd best song on the album! Now, I like ne-yo because he makes songs that pertain to his age group, instead of making music pertaining to teenagers and young children. Very great lyrics for this one. It's Wonderful that's all I can say 5/5

7. Sign me Up- I love this song! And it's production, it is extremely catchy! One of the my favorites on the album! Perfect single material. And the lyrics are really good! 5/5

8. I ain't gotta tell you- Another sexy song! Sounds like an usher song to me! It is really good! Not as good lyrically than alot of others, but still a good song! 4.5/5

9. Get down like that- This songs beat has been sampled on many other songs. the only other one I can think of at the moment is mary J. Bliges Noone will do from her breakthrough album, which I also own. So it's just kind of wierd hearing this song cause it reminds me of her song. But nevertheless, it is a good song. 4.5/5

10. Sexy Love- By far the best song on the album! It's grown and Sexy and is just an overal great song! The way that he sings this song is very melodic and the lyrics are extremely unique! I wish this was a single! 5/5

11. Let Go- Another song that isn't as lyrically good as the others, but the production and melody of the song make up for that! It's also a great song! 4.5/5

12. Time- The second best song on the album. Ne-yo's vocals on this song are amazing! I absolutely love this song! It's amazing! And a great way to end the album 5/5

13. Get down like that [Remix]-I personally seen no point in this, and it was completely redundant. I believe the rap on the song was by ghostface killa and that was pretty good, but it's the same exact song including the rap. So I'm not going to include this in the overall album rating.

I can say that the second half of the album is better than the first half overall, but all of the songs on the album were Above par to my standards.

Top 5 songs:
1. Sexy Love
2. Time
3. Mirror
4. Let me get this right
5. sign me up

56.5/60=94% Which is an A rating!

Ne-yo is definatley the future of R&B, his lyrics are wonderful and he doesnt have the best voice in the world, but it suits him well. I love his debut album, and I cannot wait for his sophmore release!

In My Own Words Poster

A master in the art of storytelling, Ne-Yo began writing at an early age. A vivid imagination and creative energy has allowed Ne-Yo to write songs for multi-platinum artists such as Mary J. Blige, B2K, Faith Evans, and Musiq. When asked about writing number one hits for other artists, simply put, Ne-Yo said, "I feel there is always room for good music. I want to reach people's soul with my lyrics through whatever vessel God chooses."

Set to release his debut album In My Own Words on Def Jam Recordings, this dynamic entertainer is ready to deliver. Infusing pop melodies to rich, soulful production the album is sure to score with fans and critics alike. Relying on mostly his own in-house crew Compound, Ne-Yo creates both a unique sound and sentiment for his records. Songs like the first single "Stay" (featuring Peedi Crack) exemplify Ne-Yo's nuanced, layered vocals and sample free production. "So Sick", a beautiful track in which he laments hearing love songs on the radio due to the feelings they conjure, reveals his voice to be clean and almost elated, but rich and weathered at the same time. But true to his charismatic character, the album shows many sides of Ne-Yo and even finds him lighter, more playful, even coy, on "When You're Mad." Sure cello hits move the track as Ne-Yo floats above, telling his woman that she's even more beautiful when she's mad.

With In My Own Words in the chamber, ready to go, Ne-Yo now just has to prepare himself for the stardom that is sure to follow. "The toughest part has been getting used to being known," he confesses, "I've always been the writer, the guy in the background, but being the actual artist is a whole new experience for me."

Citing Prince, Marvin Gaye, the Rat Pack, and Stevie Wonder in his list of favorite entertainers, Ne-Yo's album invokes a nostalgic feeling, a renaissance if you will. Whether it's the bedroom or the dance floor, Ne-Yo's songs are filled with passion and intense energy that pulls (you into the music) and puts you into a zone.

Ne-Yo is taking the music industry by storm, as he graces and challenges popular music with his writing and vocal talents. Much more than today's male singer, Ne-Yo is a rare artist; expressing creativity through drawings, paintings, martial arts and song. He is distinguished by youthful energy with in-depth lyrics that touch the soul.
You may not have heard of the name Ne-Yo before, but you've more than likely heard some of his lyrics--specifically, on Mario's massive hit, "Let Me Love You." This talented musician wrote for a number of chart-toppers before the age of 22, penning songs for Mary J. Blige, B2K, and Faith Evans as well. After working for others, Ne-Yo--a.k.a. Shaffer Smith--decided to focus on his own career. Judging by the quality of songs on this debut, his creative well is not running dry anytime soon. The kick-off single, "So Sick" showcases the same tenderness evident in his Mario hit, as does much of this slow-jam heavy CD. Smith also shines on the Michael Jackson-esque "Sign Me Up," giving props to the icon in the chorus by singing "I just wanna rock with you" with beat-fueled bravado. Ne-Yo's songs come from a love of seventies and eighties soul; as a result, his music contains some unique samples, including an O'Jays lick (on the sexy "Get Down Like That," and a Switch snippet (on "It Just Ain?t Right"). Surprisingly, for such a hooked-up songwriter, he has limited the number of guest performers on the disc to just one--rapper Peedi Peedi performs on the disc opener, "Stay." The depth of the final track, "Time," clinches the hunch; In My Own Words is an impressive debut for a seasoned songwriter, likely to make memorable music for years to come. --Denise Sheppard
