Free Music Review: Exhilarating perfomance!!

OK I admit it - I'm a Neil Diamond fan from way back but this is no doubt his best DVD ever! Diamond seems to have reinvented himself over the past few years with additions to his band and again we see the consumate professional doing what he does best - performing live to his many devoted fans. There is just so much energy in this DVD - starting with a 'rocked up' version of "Holly Holy" - just fantastic. Before I bought the DVD, I was hoping for a strong connection between Diamond and the audience and I wasn't disappointed. Diamond is THE BEST at involving his audience - he had them in the palms of his hands. I'd like to know how many TV cameras there were positioned around Madison Square Garden because they (and the 5.1 digital surround sound) captured the night brilliantly. I could go through every song and shout its praises but the highlights for me were a rollicking "Cherry Cherry" (watch Neil's band go through their paces), the reflective "Brooklyn Roads", "Forever In Blue Jeans" and of course the audience just about roared the roof off MSG when "Sweet Caroline" was sung (2 encores for good measure). Another highlight was part of the prologue from "Hot August Night" circa 1972 leading into "Crunchy Granola Suite" - the BEST concert introduction ever!! I would challenge any Diamond hater not to be tapping their toes when they hear this incredible intro!
The only (slightly) disappointing aspect of the DVD was the finish. Diamond concluded as expected with "Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show" but I would have loved to see him link the song up with "Soolaimon" in much the same manner as "Hot August Night" circa 1972. There was a connection to that landmark performance all those years ago and having that reprised would have made a memorable climax.
I just hope there is one more trip to Australia in store for the greatest singer/songwriter ever! Onya Neil!
