Free Music Review: Neil Does It Again
Hit: 4 Stars

This is Neil Diamond's thrid Christmas album. In my opinion, it's his best despite remastered versions of some of the songs from his two previous Christmas albums. Is there something wrong with that? Not at all. If there can be improvement on previous songs, why not do it and release it? I was lsitening to this CD while lying in bed and thought it was a brilliant Christmas effort.

"Cherry Cherry Christmas" and "Christmas Dream" are two new Neil Diamond compositions. "Cherry Cherry Christmas" is an upbeat song in which he uses a number of titles from his previous compositions such as Sweet Caroline and Holly Holy. "Christmas Dream", which I'm going to have to listen to again because I think there's a message in there, is a beautiful ballad.

"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", "Sleigh Ride", "The Christmas Song", "Jingle Bell Rock", "Winter Wonderland", and "Joy To The World" are all beautifully remastered songs from his previous two Christmas albums. They sound far better than when previously released and worth a listen to.

"Deck The Halls/We Wish You A Merry Christmas" is another remaster from Neil's first Christmas album. However, this version is done accapella with a barbershop quartet. It's a really good version and quite different from what we're used to hearing.

I've heard various versions of "White Christmas", from Bing Crosby to the Moody Blues and including the version on Neil's previous Christmas album. This version is really cool and is done with a 50's doo-wop flavor. This version is very different but is enjoyable to listen to. It's quite an interesting version.

"You Make It Feel Like Christmas" was originally released on Neil's "Primitve" album and was later included on his first Christmas album. This is a remaster from the previous Christmas album but it is so beautifully done that you shouldn't miss the opportunity to hear this version. It's a beautiful version and one of those must hear songs.

"Meditations On A Winter Night" is a 56 second instrumental. I don't think this song fits it with the album or why it's even included but it does not take away from the album. I'm sure we can all sit through 56 seconds of music with no problems.

I never particularly cared for "Amazing Grace" but Neil Diamond adds his own touch and style to this song. Halfway through the song, which I thought was a good idea, he narrates where and how the song came about then resumes singing the rest of the song.

"Chanukah Song" is a sort of novelty/comedy song to remind us that the Jews celebrat. The Honnaka (SP?. The song was written by Ian Maxtone-Graham, Lewis Morton, and Adam Sandler. If you've seen any Adam Sandler movies then you can appreciate the comedy in this song. I guess Neil Diamond wanted to show his humorous side by singing this one. Through the song he mentions a number of celebrities who are Jewish including Jesus Christ. The song is quite comical and I couldn't stop laughing.

I'm a hard core Neil Diamond fan and I think of his three Christmas albums, this one is his best. So what if it's a rehash of some previously released material. Any remaster of any song will make it sound better. The Beatles catalogue has been remastered and it's getting great reviews so what makes this latest Neil Diamond release any different? "Cherry Cherry Christmas" has some old and some new material on it. This is well worth the money and is a great listen. So why not give it a try?

Very few people in popular music could even dream of writing a song like "A Cherry Cherry Christmas"! But, after over 40 years of weaving his music in our collective consciousness, Neil's able to pull this one off. The title track is a catchy, clever play on the various titles of songs he's written over the years for a Neil-fan Christmas song that other folks will enjoy too! The only detriment to the album is the repetition of some songs from his previous albums, which seems like this may have been a rush job. There is loads of material out there, and Neil's renditions would have been an nice addition to the corpus. But, rehashing songs from past albums seemed unnecessary. The Channakah song was a fun addition, and I'm sure made Adam Sandler happy. If nothing else, next time consider adding other traditional Jewish music rather than repeating previously recorded material.
