Free Music Notes for A Cherry Cherry ChristmasFree Music Review: Fun and energetic Hit: 4 Stars
OK, here's a perspective that I don't think is represented by this reviewer cross-section. I am not much of an ND fan and didn't even know that this was his third Christmas CD, so the songs are new to me. He is in great voice and I like his approaches to the traditional songs, e.g., White Christmas with a doo-wop group. I really love his straight-faced take on the Chanukah song. He is the anti-Adam Sandler, and in this context that's not a bad thing. Cherry Cherry Christmas seems a little self-congratulatory to me, but I do like the other ND compositions. The man can sing, and he picks the right songs. That in itself gives me a warm glow inside.
Free Music Review: Nice Mix of New and Old Material Hit: 4 Stars
I have never purchased one of his Christmas CDs, and am glad I waited. This cd is a nice mix of new material and old material. I believe he was going for a nice holiday theme, and he succeeded.
Free Music Review: Four new songs the rest repeats from other Christmas albums. Hit: 3 Stars
If you do not have the two previous Diamond Christmas Albums than this is a decent buy. Otherwise just download the new songs and be done with it. Considering how far Diamond has come in recent years to regain his credibility as a rock artist, this is a pretty sad effort.
The new songs are nice especially "Christmas Dream," and "Cherry Cherry Christmas.
Free Music Review: JEWISH CHRISTMAS Hit: 3 Stars
Although the production and Niel Diamond's vocals were very enjoyable, the mood of the music was tongue in cheek, from a non-Christian point of view.
Free Music Review: Neil! Neil! Neil! What are you doing? Hit: 2 Stars
I can't get my head around this seasonal offering from Neil Diamond. Love him, or loathe him, he is one of the most talented songwriters that the modern era has produced and has, some terrible over-production in the 80s and 90s notwithstanding, always written some incredible material.
The last 4 years have seen him deliver some of the best music of his career, in conjunction with producer Rick Rubin, with the hugely important and impressive albums 12 Songs and Home Before Dark. These, together with the release of Hot August Night NYC showcasing his most recent and wonderfully powerful tour, have put Diamond back in the forefront of the music industry, bookending a career spanning well over 40 years.
Now, riding the wave of these incredible achievements, he releases a Christmas album which is primarily a re-hash of of two earlier seasonal efforts from over 16 years ago. There are a couple of new songs, it is true, and one of them, Christmas Dream, is quite good. He also does a passable interpretation of Amazing Grace and a weird and wonderful version of Adam Sandler's Channukah Song. That's it! Three songs worth a listen and the rest re-cycled filler! For a man that had clearly re-discovered his muse in recent years and seemed to be ending his career on a high, this is a mystifying backward step.
Let's hope that the rumoured third Album with Rubin will materialise next year and Neil can get back on track.
