Free Music Review: Horibly overlooked and under-rated!

I found this LP in 1983. I had already purchased the UNI albums, and for some reason, if not for "Longfellow Serenade", this album was simply left in the dust in the curious transition of Neil himself, and the end of his years with the Uni label. As a result, and I believe from the start, the album was not really ready for release, and was layered with a bizarre mix of songs that run the gamut from complete genius and amongst Neil's very best, to a couple of stink-weeds that he normally would have left in the B-Side collections. The outstanding tunes are few, but soar with the typical Neil Diamond early 1970's splendor, his voice deep and rich, and haunting and often tearful string arrangements. "I've Been This Way Before" is as good as anything Neil has ever done. "Lady Magdalene" is a tremendous opus that I believe emotionally completely crushes the entire soundtrack of "Jonathan Livingston Seagull", and that is saying a lot. "Longfellow Serenade" is the perfect single, and the only reason this album has likely ever been noticed, a poppy and rhythm-heavy fun song, it is a stark contrast to the rest of the album. The pleasant surprise, just for it's simplicity and amazing orchestration, is "Yes I Will." These tracks alone, are the only reason "Serenade" is important. The rest is simply filler on an already very short record. I will leave it to Neil to explain the strange appearance of "Serenade" and why it wasn't more in line with "Beautiful Noise", although in itself, "Beautiful Noise" is not even close to one of my favorite Neil Diamond albums. It just seems to me Neil had a few great tunes and tossed a record out to be heard. About 5 songs too short of a great album, nonetheless, the songs I mentioned will always be as much in my list of favorites as "Play Me" and "I Am, I Said." As it is, for digital download, a few of the songs are NOWHERE to be found, and mysteriously only a couple on compilation albums! A real mystery, Neil.
