Free Music Notes for 7 Worlds Collide - Live At The St. JamesFree Music Review: Back in the Day Hit: 4 Stars
I've loved Neil Finn forever. And this album makes me remember why. His sincerity and twist of phrase is the best of anyone around. Sure it's a little unpolished and yeah the pacing is a odd at times but the gems shine brightly. The Smiths cover makes you long for the Smiths to be making great music (or just to hear Neil sing more of them) and the Johnny Marr song makes me wonder why this guy doesn't have some solo stuff out.Tim is Tim but he chills enough to blend as well as 2 brothers can when they're getting along. I have to agree, i was pleasantly surprised at Eddie Vedder's take on the Enz classics. Makes me long for the day when you could always catch a Neil tune on the radio instead of on muzak in the grocery store! Damn U.S. playlist
Free Music Review: A Glimmer of Hope Hit: 4 Stars
In this period of dreadful music we are currently immersed in, there are a handful of people who are still making music the way it should be made. Neil Finn is one of those few. His talent became obvious with Split Enz and later in Crowded House. On 7 Worlds Collide we get a taste of some of those moments as well as some of his solo pieces. The guest musicians add an interesting angle to the performance but I think Eddie Vedder was spotlighted a little too much for a Neil Finn recording. The Split Enz numbers also could have been chosen with a little more discression. Still in all, a very good recording and proof that there still is some hope left for those of us searching for good music these days.
Free Music Review: Great after a few listens Hit: 4 Stars
Upon first listen to this album I was fairly dissapointed. Initially, the vocals on the One All songs seemed weak and I didnt care for the work of Eddie Vedder on several other tracks. However, after a few more listens this album has become a favorite. Neil Finn's voice has an incredible pure resonance live and it shines brighter than any of the other vocalists who are not as strong. Vedder's renditions of Stuff and Nonsense and Parting Ways are surprising gems after a few listens. The Finn standouts are the cover of There is a Light That Never Goes Out (even better than the original), She Will Have Her Way, and Weather With You. Recommended.
Free Music Review: You can't miss here. Hit: 4 Stars
Although never an enormously huge Split Enz or Croweded House fan, I saw this album and immidiately had to have it for some odd purpose of reminiscence. The name Neil Finn should immediately take you back to the late 80's, early 90's style of songwriting. Seeing the line-up on the disc was enough to sell me, although after a few listens...I'm hooked and needless to say, definately a fan now. The songs are exremely well crafted, plus it's live so it adds to the overall excitement of the project. If you love great hooks, songs you can sing to and exceptional songwriting buy this...buy this now!
Free Music Review: The Talented Mr. Finn Hit: 4 Stars
I have been a fan of Neil Finn's thoughtful, introspective songcraft since his days with Split Enz. This live CD is a tremendous showcase for his work. The songs range from his days w/Split Enz to Crowded House to his current solo career. They seem to have been thoughtfully chosen to highlight his own talents as well as those of his guest performers, including big brother Tim. What is also clear from the sound of this CD is that they were all having fun while recording it. I whole-heartedly recommend this CD for old and new fans alike.
