Free Music Notes for Try Whistling ThisFree Music Review: Different but classically Finn, sexy and smart Hit: 5 Stars
Every time I purchase an album by one of the Finn brothers (or both, or one of their various bands), I am always intrigued, surprised, and thrilled. This album gives me tingles. I had the same sort of reaction to it that I did to Crowded House' final release, Together Alone -- I feel this is a departure from earlier efforts but not an abandonment of those efforts. In songs like "Sinner" (the first American single), I hear what I initially think are completely new ideas and rhythms but on a second listen, I hear echoes of "Into Temptation" (from Temple of Low Men, the second CH album), "Instinct" (from Recurring Dream, the greatest hits collection) and other haunting, spiritual songs from Finn's musical repertoire. This is a smart, modern, and even sexy Finn classic. It broke my heart when CH split up, but if this was what Neil Finn felt he could not do with the band, then I feel the ends justify the means in this case. Well worth the purchase price and will definitely earn a place in my CD changer for a long time to come.
Free Music Review: Can I have another.... Hit: 5 Stars
It took me at least 5 listens to digest all of this offering from Neil Finn. The first 6 songs especially the "Last One Standing"-brilliant lyrics, excellent hooks, nice melody, and then right into the chorus laden "Souvenir". These two songs are the best one/two punch in pop music. I settled into "King Tide" and then found myself often singing "Try Whistling This". The album's climax arrived with "Sinner"--a tinge of Portishead-like sounding rhythms with a melody that is catchy. Lately, I have come to enjoy the rest of the album with as much enthusiasm as the first half of the record. I think Neil Finn saved a lot of his creative energy for his later work. Even though I'm a big fan of Split Enz and CH, a lot of this work is uneven (must I say patchy). See what I mean when you listen particularly to CH's "Woodface" or even the self titled "Crowded House". "Try Whistling This", on the other hand, is a more consistent, subtle yet brilliant piece of art.
Free Music Review: Thank You, Neil! Hit: 5 Stars
I am only too happy to recommend this album to anyone who appreciates real musical talent, integrity, a darn huge chunk of intelligence, and simply brilliant songwriting. I have many Neil Finn cds, and "Try Whistling This" is my favourite. It took some patience but now I can't live without this album. "King Tide" is sooo good, "Faster Than Light" is beautiful, and the title track is just heaven, to mention a few songs. To others the cd may sound overproduced, but I'd have to disagree. The music's many layers create a lush, dark atmosphere and make every song sound like a symphony. There's always something new to hear, so it's impossible to ever get tired of listening! If this review (or the others) doesn't convince you to check out "Try Whistling This", get yourself into a Neil Finn concert and you will be a convert for life. All I can say is thank you to Neil for sharing the fruits of his genius with us music fans; don't make us wait too long for the next one!
Free Music Review: In a Word: "Rocktastic" Hit: 5 Stars
While some songs from "Try Whistling This" are a real departure from Neil's past work with Crowded House, Finn, and Split Enz, one thing remains constant: Neil Finn once again displays his song-writing brilliance."Sinner" is incredibly lush, dark, haunting and I haven't been able to take it off repeat for days. "Faster Than Light" is yet another showcase for Neil's gorgeous harmonies. If you don't get the chills when you hear it, well... "Loose Tongue" & "Twisty Bass" are a groovy new avenue for Neil, and one which he should continue to explore. All in all, "Try Whistling This" is an album that shows Neil's got a sense of adventure as well as a little funk to go along with his already finely honed lyrical and musical ability. Work it Neil, you GO! But seriously, I hope this album receives the attention that it deserves from new listeners, old fans, and the industry. You'll be missing out on another jewel if you don't buy this.
Free Music Review: Underappreciated work of art Hit: 5 Stars
Preconceived notions can be an ugly human trait. I curse them in one breath for robbing me of the true pleasure of this album for years. On the other hand now I truly appreciate the beauty of the album in its entirety for the masterpiece it is. I cannot blame others for missing the boat. Only last month, I was listening to it while working on the computer when I GOT IT. LIKE A THUNDERBOLT! It's certainly experimental, in a sense...a step or two or a hundred to the side of Crowded House. The meolodies are gorgeous. While the drum machines, synths, and odd instruments are disconcerting to we pre-conditioned House fan, the preciseness and brilliance of choices is best revealed when the album is listened to in it's entirety. indeed, I find Try Whistling This difficult to stop once I've started. It's a sneaky opus, particularly from Loose Tongue through Addicted. I can certainly rate this with the best of CH - Together Alone...the most beautiful flowers often bloom late...
