Free Music Review: Great crisp lyrics...great crisp sound.
Hit: 5 Stars

You know who Neil Finn is right? I hope you answered yes. Everything this man touches musically turns to gold. He is my favorite songwriter, and I think he has the best voice in music. His lyrics can be nebulous, but I always feel his emotion in his music. The instruments Neil uses in all of his works have an earthy quality to them. He makes good use of the organ thanks to his long-time companion Mitchell Froom on the Hammond. Neil Finn is the most underrated musician in the U.S. and maybe the world. I feel more emotion from his music than 90% of the top 40. Every track on this CD should be listened to carefully. My favorite track is probably "Sinner," but "King Tide" is right behind it. I usually have a least favorite track, but all of the other tracks are tied for 2nd. This is a gem for anyone out there who enjoys smart lyrics combed with melodies galore. The cover artwork for this CD was done by Neil's son Elroy. Elroy did a fine job too.

Free Music Review: Beautiful as always...

I stumbled across Crowded House in college and have been a rabid fan since then, snapping up new albums as they came out, (Woodface is on my all time favorite list)...but became a bit disenchanted when Neil broke off to work with Tim.Where Neil is smooth and melancholy, Tim is jagged and psychotic. Vocally, they are also divergent...Tim brought an odd edge to their workings together...which was why i was happy to get a solo album from Neil. I didn't like it at first, but was used to the "grower" syndrome with Crowded House albums (if you LOVE it on first play, you're sure to HATE it later..) I first heard "sinner" as I fell asleep the listening to it the night I got it home, and it hasn't left my brain since. Other favorites are "faster than light" with its beeootiful harmonies, and "Loose Tongue" and "Twisty Bass", cuz they're kinda creepy. lovely lovely record...

Free Music Review: The best artists always get better with age
Hit: 5 Stars

Having been an admirerer of Neil's work since "I Got You" (Split Enz), I find that with each new piece of work, he just keeps improving his songwriting craft. "Try Whistling This", as his first "solo" recording, has allowed him the freedom as a songwriter to take the words and melodies in directions that a writer can't possibly do within the confines of a "group" structure. The result is his best work to date. An artist that is still closing in on the "peak" of his creativity as a pop songwriter. There is definitely "life after 40" in contemporary music, in fact, most of the great songwriters are doing their best work in this stage of their lives. For those out there that are looking for pop songwriting at it's very best, this is a cd you must have, it only improves with repeat listens.

Free Music Review: Brilliant!
Hit: 5 Stars

Great for a die-hard fan- and WONDERFUL for anyone whose only knowledge of Neil Finn is Don't Dream It's Over (the Hey Now song from 1987).

I've heard a preview copy of this album, and although I understand that the vocals are a litle low in the mix, it's pretty close to perfect as it is. Sinner, the first song to be released in the states, is seductive and dynamic, and She Will Have Her Way, the first single elsewhere, has an undercurrent of similarness to a certain 60's group from Liverpool who shall remain nameless. King Tide, Faster Than Light, Loose Tongue and Last One Standing are all also terrific and Mitchell Froom does wonderful things on Astro. For something completely different from more familiar Finn-stuff like I Got You or Don't Dream It's Over, though, nothing is more interesting and dizzying than Twisty Bass.

Free Music Review: June/July Blue
Hit: 5 Stars

I have over 1,000 peices of music in my collection and I like to ask my astute music loving friends if you could take only ten cd's with you to the moon, what are the titles. I think I might have take ten copies of this because it may be the best one I own. The lyrics, vocals, arrangements, playing and production are all equal or better to what Lennon would be doing if he were still alive. I listen to the title track and 'Addicted' the most, but could play straight through as much as anything else in my collection. I saw him in Boston and was hugely disappointed that the crowd was littered with people who knew Eddie Vedder was his special guest. Here is hoping he tours with his brother Tim following the upcoming release of his new effort. "as if you were deranged" Indeed
