Free Music Notes for Try Whistling ThisFree Music Review: neil and the muse Hit: 5 Stars
As a long time fan of split enz, crowded house, and tim finn, I approached this album with great reticence thinking it couldn't be as good as I hoped. Even so, neil finn continues to show himself as (in my view) one of the most talented songwriters of a generation. The album is good after one listen and it is extraordinary after a few months of standard rotation in your stereo. Finn's got a timeless knack for lyric and melody and he paints pictures that haunt the mind long after the cd player has stopped.
Free Music Review: Fabilicious! Hit: 5 Stars
Neil Finn is like a John Lennon that never had a Paul McCartney to bring him down. Neil Finn gets all the credit here. Oh my god, those sweet and delicious, twisting melodies! Is there anyone in music today to rival this man's lyrics and poetry? I can almost not stand to live. My sincere belief is that Neil Finn will go down in the annals of musical history as the most talented songwriter of the late 20th century that never got any airplay. For the good of man, won't you please buy this record?
Free Music Review: Hypnotic Hit: 5 Stars
The first time I put this CD on to have a listen It took a moment for me to adjust to the distinct lack of Crowded House signature sound bytes, and on that note, I guess I didn't take in much. But when I came back I realised this was something special. There are few better natrually beautiful voices then Finn, and he deserves every reward for the number of instantly winning songs on this solo debut. My family thinks I'm weird for liking him so much but I know all the words and I don't care!
Free Music Review: This is a long-awaited delight Hit: 5 Stars
For those who know his work, "Try Whistling This" may not be a huge surprise. For everyone else who has only a nodding acquaintance with Neil's contributions to, and leadership of, Split Enz and Crowded House, this disc will be a welcome introduction to one of the most talented singer-songwriters on the planet. Start with "She Will Have Her Way," move on to the title track, "Astro" and the U.S. single, "Sinner." Take your time and savor Neil Unleashed.
Free Music Review: The gift of Melody Hit: 5 Stars
It's official: with this album, Neil Finn has completed his journey to becoming the sixth Beatle (the fifth being Jeff Lynne). Seriously, this guy has an amazing sense of melody which will never be out-of-date. But as with the Crowded House tunes, you must give them a listen several times before you can really appreciate Finn's talents. In this day and age of Internet-sound-byte-CD-scan-5-second-attention-spans, I wonder how many listeners will make the effort.
