Free Music Review: Funniest album of the past decade! Possibly even longer!

This is one of the greatest records ever made, all-time! Neil Hamburger is a hilarious comedian unlike anyone else in the business today. To the uninitiated, it will come across as such a jarring and unexpected surprise. A friend of mine gave me a copy of this record and his earlier "Great Phone Calls" album and I have NEVER been the same since. It caused violent laughter and, eventually, painful throat damage. But it really wasn't an issue, as I am now a convert for life. I immediately purchased all of Neil's albums to show my loyalty to the hardest working man on the comedy circuit.

This + "Great Calls" are absolute must haves (endlessly enjoyable), "America's Funnyman" + the Malaysia disc are more challenging but are also fantastic. The EP and the oddly different "Laugh Out Lord" are more for completists, but if you dig this, chances are you're gonna be one of them. It's certainly not for everyone, but if your sense of humor aligns (or collides) with Neil's, you are in for one awesome treat! I wish I could erase these albums from my memory so I could be in unexpected awe of his wisdom for the first time again, but even knowing the punchlines it still leaves me in stitches.

Neil Hamburger's a shooting star and you can't slow him down! It'd be great if Drag City reissued the early 7-inch EPs and "50 States, 50 Laughs" (a tour only CD) but considering Neil's luck, I'm not holding my breath. Buy this and "Great Phone Calls" now and prepare yourself for a laugh riot!

One thing is for certain: at least standup persona Neil Hamburger's take on X-rated comedy has a longer shelf life than most albums of its ilk. Perhaps that's because Raw Hamburger, like all Neil Hamburger projects, is conceptual. The jokes are intentionally bad, his audience is a fickle lot, and Hamburger--despite a reportedly grueling tour schedule--isn't a comedian you're likely to see at the local comedy club anytime soon. On Raw Hamburger, jokes about Hamburger's ex-wife, the IRS, blockbuster movies, and dirty diapers are interspersed with plenty of cursing and audience interplay. There aren't a lot of funny jokes here, but taken as a whole, it's as comical as standup gets. The risqué ditty "She Sits Among the Cabbages and Peas," a rare chance to hear Hamburger singing, is an added bonus. --Jason Verlinde
