Free Music Review: Neil Young Is Back
Hit: 5 Stars

As a big Neil Young fan, I was terribly disappointed with Neil's last studio album, "Living With War". IMO, It was his worst effort ever. I really worried that Neil was cooked and had nothing left anymore. But with this new "Chrome Dreams II" CD, I am thrilled to report that Neil is not done, in fact, he is back big time.

This is clearly Neil's best effort in many many years. Although I enjoyed "Prairie Wind" and "Are You Passionate", this latest effort by Mr. Young compares favorably with Neil's best. There are a number of tracks that will hold up against almost anything he has done. The 18 minute "Ordinary People" and the 14 minute "No Hidden Path" are both instant Neil Young classics. "Beautiful Bluebird" will remind you of his "Harvest" and "After The Goldrush" days. And you can even hear his Buffalo Springfield side with "Dirty Old Man". For a change of pace, get a load of the final track, "The Way" where he uses a group of children for the chorus. The only complaint I have is the track titled "Boxcar". At under three minutes long, it was a nice track but left me wanting more. I guess he just had nothing more to say.

This is a terrific album by Neil Young, a must have for all fans. I personally can not get enough of it. And after the afore mentioned bomb "Living With War", I am happy to report that Neil Young is back. I now can't wait to see what is next. And I still anxiously await his archives project.

Free Music Review: Worth the price just for "Ordinary People"
Hit: 4 Stars

Its worth the cost just for the "Ordinary People" track. One of his best lately and I understand it was recorded several years ago. It sounds like the old Neil, maybe that's why I like it better than his more recent releases. As a big Neil fan since college days, early 70's, its always interesting to see what's next.

Most of the rest of the songs are OK, nothing to write home about, but "Ordinary People" is fantastic, especially the more you listen to the lyrics.

Free Music Review: No Prairie Wind, but. . . .
Hit: 4 Stars

This can't be the best work Neil has done "in years" or "in the last decade," because Prairie Wind just came out in 2005, and Neil may never again do anything as superb as that one. Nevertheless, there is some fine music on Chrome Dreams II. In some ways it is an odd mixture of music, but maybe it just seems that way because Prairie Wind is so consistant thematically. In the end, Neil never let's his fans down. I love this man.

Free Music Review: Young as fresh as ever
Hit: 5 Stars

What a quality update to a classic career. May there be like this a a future yet to be discovered.

Free Music Review: A nice balance - Near Perfection
Hit: 5 Stars

Young brings it all together here sounding like on Rust Never Sleeps, a combination of acoustic and electric songs and jams, but also more even and consistent than in the past. This Crazy Horse Young is my favorite sound. I love it and have no trouble hearing it over and over. The songs are heartfelt and spiritual, rootsy and positive without being obvious and corny, the playing is superb and ... playful (organic like a mountain stream tumbling down through boulders, wandering, moving, ever the same stream through changing forms) - a really nice balance.

It's nice to see an artist being themselves and refining their signature sound, honing their craft but still taking risks and letting it flow. Some people may think the 18 minute Ordinary People is a bit much (never ending cycle of guitar jams and soaring horns amid wandering lyrics), but I could listen to a whole CD of the stuff.... Many of the songs here sound familiar but I just can't put my finger on from where, perhaps that is the mark of a classic. Keep it up Mr. Young - long may you run!
