Free Music Review: I enjoyed watching Neil perform his classic hit songs
Hit: 5 Stars

Neil Young is a music legend, and this concert DVD features Neil performing most of early hit songs at Massey Hall in Toronto Canada. He sounds great vocally. After watching this DVD, I am convinced that he is also a talented and under rated guitar player too. My favorite song is "Old Man." This song is about wanting to be loved and feeling alone. "Down By The River" is a hit that Neil had as a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. I love Neil's guitar playing on this song. The subject of the song is about how a man feels after he shoots the one he loves. The subject matter is weird to me, but Neil sounds great performing this tune. "Helpless" is another classic song. This tune is about how much Neil loves his home in Ontario Canada. "Heart Of Gold" is another excellent tune. I love Neil's harmonica playing here I also liked the song "The Needle and The Damage Done" This song is about the allure and danger of drugs, and the effects they can have on a person. "Ohio" is Neil's anti war song This song is his tribute to the four students who died at Kent State in 1970. This song is very moving and one of my favorites. I really enjoyed watching this DVD and listening to the music here. If you are a fan of Neil Young, this CD and DVD combo is a must for your collection.

Free Music Review: Instant Deserted Island Disc
Hit: 5 Stars

A new album just washed up on the shore of this deserted island that I'm shipwrecked on and has created a problem. Something's going to have to get kicked off the island. There is only room for 10 discs on my Deserted Island List and this new Neil Young Live At Massey Hall has to stay. There won't be a challenge or a task...Massey Hall has immunity.

Ok, enough of the Reality TV analogy. What we are talking about here is the 2nd release from Neil Young's Archive series. This one is Live At Massey Hall 1971 and it captures Neil on stage performing solo a group of freshly penned tunes that would soon end up on the famous Harvest album. Incredible versions of 17 songs with outstanding sound quality. A real gem unearthed and revealed.

There is a companion DVD with concert footage, and some old documentary type film clips. Clicking around the DVD I found some more video with Neil on the Johnny Cash Show and a radio interview where Neil discusses some of the tunes. There is a photo gallery, some original lyric sheets and newspaper reviews.
The DVD also has high resolution 24 bit/ 96 khz audio which sounds great through my home theater setup.

Wow...thanks Neil for sharing this music with the world. What else is in your archives?

Free Music Review: A Journey Through the Past!
Hit: 5 Stars

Plenty of people have already asserted the greatness of this record. Here's a unique point in Neil's career to look back on. Some of the tunes were still works in progress, as is evidence by tracks like the "A Man Needs a Maid/Heart of Gold Suite", where he sings 'A man feels afriad' in the first verse. It's also interesting to hear the song "See the Sky About to Rain" so many years before it's appearance on "On the Beach". Neil's voice is young and fresh; he sounds as good here as he does on any studio recording.

As for sound quality, this is (in my opinion) the best sound quality I've heard on a live Neil record. The audience is polite and the microphones are very well-placed. The guitar and piano sounds great (as do the vocals).

I couldn't have asked for a better variety of songs either...unless he were to do a complete performance of "After the Goldrush" or "Harvest." This album has a nice mix of strong tracks from those two as well as some stuff from his earlier records, not to mention a song or two from his time spent with Crosby, Stills and Nash. The performance of "Helpless" is pretty amazing.

This is definitely my favorite Neil Young live record to date...I can't wait for what's next!

Free Music Review: Here Comes the Flood (of Memories)
Hit: 5 Stars

It is hard to believe that so many years have passed. I discovered Neil at the age of 14 or 15, over 35 years ago. More than any other artist of the day, he influenced my teenage years which now seem a lifetime away.

I learned guitar and wrote my crappy little songs because of Neil. I wore the plaid shirts. In fact, that style of shirt was always known as a "Neil Younger" around our house. (My Dad even took my little brother shopping at Penney's one time and asked the sales clerk where the Neil Youngers were!)

These now very familiar songs were pretty much brand new in 1971 and they sound brand new all over again in 2007 stripped down to just Neil, his inimitable guitar style and piano. I am not sure that his voice ever sounded stronger than it does here. The production is crystal clear and beautiful. Like other reviewers, I agree the audience is a tad loud and obnoxious in this intimate setting and I tire of the banter after the first listen. Even so, this recording is absolutely essential and deserves classic status.

As an adult, I have shifted my worship to a higher being; nevertheless, I do thank God for Neil's music which still has the power to move me and make me feel alive.

Free Music Review: wow.
Hit: 5 Stars

been good times for neil young fans of late. his 2006 studio album, living with war, was excellent. then came the outstanding "live at the fillmore east," now we have "massey hall 1971" hot on its heels. whereas the fillmore album was an electric jamfest of energetic rock and roll, massey hall is an all acoustic show, featuring neil young performing solo on acoustic guitar and piano. the sound quality is absolutely amazing. listening to it on the stereo this evening, i could close my eyes and feel that mr young was playing right there in the living room. the whole thing has a warm and intimate tone, and crystal clear sonics. the performance itself is stunning. mr young's phrasing and delivery is at a high peak of expression, sensitive to nuance and micro-tonal shiftings, making his unique voice all the more haunting. "journey through the past," "helpless," "cowgirl in the sand," "the needle and the damage done," "ohio," and "down by the river" are beautifully rendered, in particular. but the whole set is great, and everybody will have their own favorites here. mr young's acoustic guitar sounds spectacular, as well. anyway, i've got a life to live, so i'll stop gushing, and get back to it. just wanted to have my say. thanks.
