Free Music Notes for Live at Massey Hall (CD/DVD)Free Music Review: A Journey through the Past Hit: 5 Stars
I knew that this would be good after the excellent reproduction of the Crazy horse show at the Fillmore. I wasn't disappointed at all-the sound quality is excellent and the selection was a Journey through the Past of Neil in his most intimate setting back in Canada. Songs found only previously on "Time Fades Away" are presented here with real emotion and clarity along with stellar renditions of "A man needs a Maid/Heart of Gold" and "Old Man" (especially liked the Video images on the DVD of the ranch) "Helpless" is presented to the folks of Ontario with real heartfelt emotion. "Dance,Dance,Dance" from the original Crazy Horse LP is presented at the end of the show with the Audience lending a hand. "Bad Fog of Loneliness" is a selection that I had never heard before so was a rare treat. Neil closes and opens his show with two chestnuts from his days with the Buffalo Springfield which is fitting since this entire show reminds us, as Dan Fogelberg would later pen, of the Age of the innocent. The inner sleave tells of a huge project that Neil is releasing later this year coveringthe 1963-1972 period-I can't wait. Bravo on releasing these Gems to your fans Neil.
Free Music Review: Absolutely the #1 Neil Young Album Hit: 5 Stars
Because of this album, I have become a compulsive Neil Young freak. This is the CD that made me compulsive about the guy (and anyone he worked with). Buy it. NOW.
I have always liked Neil Young, but this album puts him in an entirely new light for me. I used to think of him as a subpar Dylan -- nice tunes, distinctive homey voice, not as prolific. All of that changed with Massey Hall's release. It is mesmerizing. The sound quality is truly audiophile -- how did they DO that? The album is so good it forced me to study Neil and his art in depth.
Having studied his work now, I'd now put Neil Young on par with Lennon/McCartney, Bob Dylan and George Harrison as a singer-songwriter. Most would disagree with me, but I would now put him even above Bob Dylan, for the simple reason that Neil Young has never lost a step in 40 years. Even the "dark years" produced wonderful albums. The songs here are simply stunning. They will literally bring tears to your eyes.
The DVD is worth having because it has a few interesting interviews -- especially the one with the "Old Man."
Free Music Review: What Is There To Say That Hasn't Already Been Said?!? Hit: 5 Stars
This album, more than many other Neil albums, should extinguish the flame that is people who say that Neil Young "doesn't have a good voice." I've heard the same about Bob Dylan and Tom Petty as well. They may not have huge range in their voices or what some might call a "classic" voice, but nonetheless their voices and only THEIR voices are what fits best with the music.
Now, on to the album. It is very hard to believe that this album was recorded more than 3 and a half decades ago...if you were to tell me that it was recorded just last night I would not call you a liar! The sound quality is absolutely perfect, which surprises me for something recorded so long ago. Neil's voice is at its absolute pinnacle, and the acoustic guitars he uses sound as perfect as any I've heard before.
However, there is one downside to listening to this album - it makes me wish I was there! I think I would faint in ecstasy if I went to a show of his that opened with "On The Way Home" and closed with "I Am A Child."
It just doesn't get any better than that.
Free Music Review: Refreshing and powerful Hit: 5 Stars
I am buying this CD for my cousin in England for XMas. I've had this CD/DVD for sometime now. My sister had it before me. That was when I first heard it. I was immediately struck with the sincerity and power of it. I was over in England playing my cousin's guitar and she is a big Neil fan too. I played a number of tunes including a couple Neil Young tunes. She and I are pretty much on the same page when it comes to music even though she is an ocean and a continent away. I like that. This CD (and DVD) are tied with "Comes a time" as my favorite Neil young CD's. This CD is very refreshing especially in a time when there is so much over production and so little space in some of today's music. To hear how much beauty one voice and one instrument can have when a true artist is at work is refreshing and powerful. Neil's guitar playing is right on and beautiful. His voice also right on pitch and time, right in the groove. This is all just coming from one guy. No extra stuff or help with modern equipment. Just one guy with either a guitar or a piano and it is really wonderful.
Free Music Review: Young Man's Fancy. . . Hit: 5 Stars
. . . is the name of my favorite all-time bootleg album. It's Neil acoustic from the last show of this tour. The intimacy of this album made me want to see him more than any other artist at the time. There truly was a magical aura to a Neil show then, and though this is still arguably true, it's also hard to argue with the emotion one gets from listening to this music. Except for Sugar Mountain, the Massey show contains most of the gems from this album, reproduced in crystal clarity. From the opening chords of On the Way Home to the closing of I am a Child, there is so much substance here that it is unbelievable that it took this long for it to be released. What a gem!
The DVD does show its age, ironically coming across as a bootleg itself. For me, it detracts a bit from the music, especially when there is so much other high-quality Neil video out there. Nevertheless, it's great for Neil to be releasing all of this live material. His shows have changed so much throughout the years that there is bound to be many great hours yet to come. Thank you Neil.
