Free Music Notes for Live at Massey Hall (CD/DVD)Free Music Review: CD GREAT-DVD, FORGET IT Hit: 5 Stars
Short, sweet and to the point. The concert at Massey Hall is a Neil Young acoustical classic. A lot of songs that were new at the time and have since become classics along with a few old favorites.
Unless you just have to have everything by Neil Young, just get the CD - you can live without the DVD. Out of 68 minutes, a repeat of the CD, you get - if you're lucky, maybe 20 minutes of poorly photographed concert footage. And what's the remainder? If you're stoned and really get your jollies in watching a film of tape recorder taping the concert, you'll truly enjoy the DVD. Yep, that's the bulk of the DVD - a tape recorder recording the concert with Neil singing in the background. And from the looks of the surroundings, the tape recorder isn't even at Massey Hall, but probably somewhere else.
A truly great CD which belongs in the collection of every Neil Young fan. You can live without the DVD and not miss a thing. Take the money you'll save by purchasing just the CD sans DVD and buy another Neil Young album.
Free Music Review: Briggs was right! Hit: 5 Stars
Now, I love "Harvest", I do. However, the tracks with the London Symphony Orchestra always seemed a bit overblown. Not on this release, nice and sparse here, with Young inserting verses from "Heart of Gold" during "A Man Needs A Maid" to create a wonderful medley. While "Old Man" was always a favorite on "Harvest" thanks to James Taylor's guitjo picking and harmony vocals, it's just as good here. And "Bad Fog of Loneliness", that's probably the best song here. Its non-inclusion on "Harvest", or any other album until this one, is inexplicable.
David Briggs has got to be smiling up in Heaven and thanking Neil Young for finally coming to his senses and putting this out. It was supposed to be Neil's fourth solo album, not his forty-second. But it's a moot point now, it's out, it's great, go buy it.
May Archival Young recordings keep on coming! I'm not sure if they'll be better, but they've got to be as good. Up next, how about something from the "Time Fades Away" tour, if possible?
Free Music Review: With an Asterisk Hit: 5 Stars
I hate to be the nitpicker, but here goes.
I agree with everyone that this is a fantastic CD; even after only a few listens it is rapidly becoming one of my favorites. Neil is in excellent voice: strong, clear, ringing even, and his guitar and piano are top notch. Beautiful in fact. Songs that are so familiar and well-loved are at once old friends and new sensations. Not an easy feat.
So, what's the complaint? The audience. They are annoying. They break into applause in the middle of a song at the mere mention of "Canada" (hey, I love Canada, too, but please); or they applaud at the first recognition of the opening chords (OK), but then have to re-applaud the first words, too. Cheesh! And oh, yeah, let's applaud when Neil chastises a photographer. I was around and old enough in '71. Were all audiences this lame?
Audience bashing aside, this CD is beyond essential. And I haven't even gotten to the DVD yet. I gotta go now and continue listening....
Free Music Review: Neil Young At His Best Hit: 5 Stars
I have been waiting for a release like this ever since I am began to reall enjoy Neil Young. The excitement I felt when I read that this was coming out was indescribable. I am a relatively young Neil Young fan (20 years old) and appreciate all types of music, new and old. I have to tell you, though, this might become my favorite album of all time. Honestly, there is not one bad track on this album. We've all heard most of these songs before, but these versions are all superior to any studio tracks or any other live versions of these songs. I thought nothing could ever top the acoustic side of "Live Rust," but "Live at Massey Hall" blows that out of the water. Stand-outs include "Ohio," "Helpless," "Old Man," and the simply amazing "Journey Through the Past." How that song is not a mainstream Neil Young song is amazing, because it is simply gorgeous on this album. I recommend this album to anyone who enjoys music. It is sure to not disappoint. Thanks Neil for this masterpiece.
Free Music Review: A real treat Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this CD when it was first released, and I was so blown away by it I had planned to immediately write a glowing review. Well, here it is December, and I'm just now getting around to writing a review. Looking through all the other 5 star reviews, I see that praise for this CD has been very well expressed, so let me just say the following. I ordered this CD from Amazon, and when I picked it up from the post office I immediately put it into the CD player to check out on the drive home. Song after song was so jaw droppingly good though, that I never made it home. Instead I just headed out into the hills to keep listening to the CD. It was that good. And with 17 tracks, this is a fairly long CD, but not once did I grow tired of the CD and want to turn around. That was back in March, and I still listen to this CD all the time. It is a real treat as so many others have expressed so well. Very highly recommended.
