Free Music Notes for On the Beach

Free Music Review: Undeniable masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

29 years ago "On the Beach" arrived to a hail of negative reviews. Rolling Stone was particularly cruel. Everyone wanted Harvest, Neil as usual wasn't cooperating. Bleak, depressing, and maybe his most honest work."on the Beach" stands alone as
one of the greatest works of the Youngsters career. Documenting
the Laurel Canyon period, Revolution Blues, reportedly a song
about the Manson Family, and his short association with same is almost hysterical in tone. Ambulance Blues is just plain Gorgeous. and For the Turnstyles reflects on the duality of stardom. Neil has often said that he prefers the sound of these albums in their original format; ANALOG, but this sounds great on CD. It's nice to have a copy of this on vinyl if nothing else just for the cover, but An LP that still stands up as social comentary, and great musicianship is finally available to the masses.

Free Music Review: Underrated Neil Young
Hit: 5 Stars

ON THE BEACH is yet another underrated example of how Neil Young overcame three challenges (epilepsy, diabetes, polio) to virtually turn music on its head. In fact, the fact that Young's disabilities haven't stopped him from controlling his own career is part of why this album was unavailable on CD for so long. Digging his way out of the despair of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded earlier but released a year later), Young creates a strange hybrid of hippie folk-rockers Buffalo Springfield and pro-law-enforcement hard rockers Montrose, which seemed to foretell what he would do for much of the second half of the 70s. This CD has a line on the first song, "Sooner or later, it all gets real", which inspired me to hang up pictures of pretty actresses as a deterrent to excessive self-indulgence. This CD is great and deserves much higher regard than it's gotten over the years.

Free Music Review: Best Music for 4 AM
Hit: 5 Stars

Where to begin... I have been a huge Neil fan for many a year and learned to play guitar playing his early stuff. Many years later AT LSUI met a friend who had a copy of On The Beach on LP and he turned me on to it. I prized the cassette that I had of a nearly perfect recording. I can't tell you how many late nights my friend would decide we had consumed enough and were wiped out enough to play the tape. Man it is the best music I have put on at 4AM PERIOD! I became a tradition and the tape became part of our friendship. Friends would say they were huge fans of Neil, and we would give each other a knowing look and ask, "Like On The Beach?" They would look puzzled and then we would explain the story of Neil's `missing 6 pack". All I can say is "Thanks Neil...about time!" It is one of his top 3 works. BUY IT!

Free Music Review: A Dark and Angry Masterpiece!
Hit: 5 Stars

Neil vents his anger on this one-anger at the music industry, fans, the movie industry, himself, and all the senseless drug deaths of his friends. It's barely produced, in fact it almost has the sound of a live recording-ragged and rough playing and singing. The lyrics are excellent, and convey a sense of anger and an urgency to let it all out. This is not party music, folks. It's for late nights alone, when you need a soul cleansing. Oddly enough, there is almost a sense of relief, and maybe even hopefullness by the time you get to the end. Despite all the angry and dark lyrics, there is a complete lack of bitterness, and a feeling that he said what he had to say in song, and can now move on. A MUST for all of Neil Young fans, and anyone who appreciates well written lyrics. Highly Recommended!

Free Music Review: Bluest album ever released by Neil Young
Hit: 5 Stars

"Walk On" was the hit from this LP, but it was the rest of the album that created that blue-stoned atmosphere that made this offering one to roll another number and contemplate the meaning of Neil's message. You'll know what I mean as soon as "See the Sky about to Rain" gets going. "Revolution Blues" is one of the most angry songs that Neil has ever made and a great rocker. All the other songs carry the general mood till it's end when Neil tells us we've been "pissing in the wind". "Vampire Blues" is just as fitting today as it was in 1974. The cover to this album is a classic-with Neil walking away from the headlines of Nixon resigning-the passing of an era- our so we thought. The only criticism is the length of the LP. It's still one of my favorites.
