Free Music Notes for On the BeachFree Music Review: Enigmatic & Brilliant... Hit: 5 Stars
Here's a question: Why would a mainstream artist with well over 30 albums available on CD allow one of his best and most loved albums to remain deleted for over 20 years?... Difficult to understand at any level, not least of which is in terms of his appreciation of the demands of his fans.Truth is (or appears to be) that Neil Young is exceedingly clever in manipulating the recording industry and his record buying public to maintain the enigmatic image on which much of his success is based. Fair conclusion?... well if this sounds too cynical there's good reason for it. Having just played my long awaited and newly acquired CD version of "On the Beach" for the first time in many years I'm simply blown away by it. Not just so much better than I remember from the days before I packed my record player & vinyl collection away in the loft but, in retrospect, one of his most cohesive, exciting & beautifully played albums - made all the better by its digital re-mastering. So... why on earth hold it back for so long? If you're not a Neil Young fan you can safely ignore all of this and add this to your collection of "must have" albums from the 1970's. But, if you are, get it, revel in its brilliance, and then ponder whether an artist is justified in controlling the release of his recordings in the way he or we want.
Free Music Review: FINALLY Hit: 5 Stars
Well here is one of my top five albums released on CD along with American Stars and Bars, Re-ac-tor, and Hawks & Doves. On the Beach was written shortly after Tonight's the Night, and has the same edgy feel but is more savage and defeats depression. The flower pattern is quite visible now.1) Walk on - This song is on Decade only better here, Neil starts the CD with a classic. 10/10 2) See the Sky About to Rain - Written before the others and fits well here. 10/10 3) Revolution Blues - Did Manson write this? Those Dune Buggies,I'm speechless 10/10 4) For the Turnstiles - I always felt this song was about losing. Again forget the Decade recording. 10/10 5) Vampire Blues - This Oil song has a great beat. 9/10 Those were the appetizers, now for the main course. 6) On the Beach - The feelings of this song are too hard to describe, and the most beautiful guitar solo ever. 11/10 7) Motion Pictures (For Carrie) - My all time personal favorite song by Neil Young. 11/10 8) Ambulance Blues - Another Classic, the lyrics take you everywhere you need to go. another 11/10 My record player broke down years ago and side 2 was scratched from repeated play. I'm Thanking Neil for releasing this masterpiece again, and Bye Bye Bootlegers. Please hurry Time Fades Away.
Free Music Review: underappreciated Hit: 5 Stars
As I remember this album wasn't received well by critics but for me it's one of his best. I like him when he's at his weirdest (songs like Last Trip to Tulsa) and this may be the weirdest one he made and I really dig the cover with the car tail fin sticking out of the sand. I liked every song but my favorites were For the Turnstyles, Revolution Blues and the incredible Ambulance Blues. When cd's started to come out in the 80's I was so annoyed I could never find this (also Hawks and Doves). If you're a big Neil fan and don't have this one definitely get it
Since others posted their favorite parts to Ambulance Blues I will too - every word is great but these really hit me big time. I had just gone through a breakup with my first real love so I was in a dark phase then too like Neil.
She needs someone
that she can scream at
And I'm such a heel
for makin' her feel so bad.
I guess I'll call it
sickness gone
It's hard to say
the meaning of this song
Also :
And there ain't nothin'
like a friend
Who can tell you
you're just pissin'
in the wind.
Wow think I have to listen this again now hope I don't get misty
Cheers
Free Music Review: One of Neil's all-time greatest albums Hit: 5 Stars
I first heard the song "Ambulance Blues" a few years ago and instantly fell in love with it--by far one of the most melancholic, beautiful songs ever written. I was saddened to learn that the only way I'd be hearing it would be via MP3, since the "On the Beach" album had never been released on CD, being completely out of print. Until now, and I'm so glad Neil decided to finally re-release this (along with 3 other out of print albums). "Ambulance Blues" is by far the album's best song, but there is not a single dud on here. Songs like "Motion Pictures," "Revolution Blues," "Walk On," and the title track, are all examples of Neil at his best. All together, this album is a glorious masterpiece of rock and roll. After listening to this album on fuzzy mp3's for so long, finally being able to listen to this on a properly remastered CD is truly a musical treat (note: more proof that freely-traded MP3s sell records). Neil has about 40 albums to his credit, and "On the Beach" is one of his top 5 in my opinion. The world is a much better place with this album being sold again. Thanks Neil!
Free Music Review: Don't Turn Away Hit: 5 Stars
"On the Beach" chronicles a long trip gone bad. It's a moody, reflective album that closes with three songs that prove that even a Canuck can sing the blues. The playing gives new meaning to the term laid-back. More like up-ended. Despite the jaunty opener "Walk On" and the gloriously demented "Revolution Blues," where Young adopts the persona of old acquaintance Charlie Manson, the overall feel is one of resignation. "Ambulance Blues" features some of Young's finest lyrical turns. "All along the Navajo Trail," he wearily sings, "Burn-outs stub their toes on garbage pails." It's a chilling line, a version of American history in a single phrase: one culture displaces another and then leaves its debris, some of it human, to defile sacred ground. To the death scene of sixties idealism an "ambulance can only go so fast." Help may be on the way, but it will arrive too late. On the cover, a bootless Young turns his back on the wasteland and gazes out to sea, his vintage sled submerged in sand. Give it up Dorothy, the album seems to say, there's no way home.
