Free Music Notes for On the BeachFree Music Review: Self destruction can be so subtle... Hit: 5 Stars
Ah, the holy trinity: Tonight's the night, Zuma and On the Beach. Zoned out, drugged out, hopeful and yet right on the brink of death. On the Beach is the epitome of what I'd like to call 'beautiful loser' music, an 'it's all right' to everyone who's lost their way (that is all of us, right?) Though often folky and gentle, the lyrics--especially on the latter half of the album, are particularly decimating. The title track and Ambulance Blues are as harrowing as anything on Tonight's the night while seemingly pleasant songs. What always gets me with this album is that it doesn't hit you over the head with all it's ugliness and pain, rather, all the agony is internal and personalized. This to me feels like Young at his most personal and I must assume that's why this album has been unavailable for so long.If this was the only album Neil Young ever made, it would have been enough to make him a legend. So much of everything else he's done (which is still admittedly quite good), seems to obscure that. I'm glad people now have a chance to hear Young at his very best.
Free Music Review: Dark and Simple Hit: 5 Stars
Compared with the preceding Neil Young album "Harvest", "On the Beach" marks a pretty significant style in change. Where "Harvest" was generally a very melodic and catchy album, with strong roots in country music, the songwriting here is very much "Down to Earth", leaning strongly on the blues, and at times quite similar to the style of Bob Dylan.
One song sticks pretty much out from the rest; the beautiful "See the Sky about to Rain", which is a lot in the style of "Harvest" and also a personal favorite of mine.
Another very memorable track is the closing song "Ambulance Blues" which sounds like a song that Lou Reed could have written.Other favorites are "Walk On" and the acoustic "For the Turnstiles"
All songs are worthwhile, of course, and the album is another good example that you'll never know which way Neil Young will go next. Lyrically the songs are often dark and disillutioned.
Among the musicians you will find prominent names as David Crosby, Graham Nash and Rick Dank and Levon Helm from the Band.
Free Music Review: A must have for your collection Hit: 5 Stars
Any true fan of Neil Young will probably have this on vinyl, but like myself I was to young to buy it in 1974. Neil is one of my favorite artist because he doesnt bore us by kepping his sound the same. He always sounds fresh and you know his music is pure. ON THE BEACH is a must have if you are a fan. Now that it has been released on CD, fans of all ages can truly hear how great this album is. When I found out it was being re-released, it was looking forward to that day and I can say that I am very pleased with this album. I've read so much about it and I was only familiar with 2 songs from this album FOR THE TURNSTILES, and WALK ON, both of which are great songs. REVOLUTION BLUES, VAMPIRE BLUES, ON THE BEACH are also great songs to listen to. The album is somewhat somber and dark, but the songs have great melodies and although Neil wont ever be compared to Pavoratti, he still sounds good here. So I highly recommend that you add this disc to your collection. You cant call yourself a Neil Young fan and not have this in your collection
Free Music Review: Get On the Beach with Neil Young and rock out Hit: 5 Stars
I recently got this album and listened to it twice back to back already. I already consider it some of his best work. On the Beach is a great album. every song is great and kept my attention throughout like most Young albums always do. I didn't know of this album when I first got into Neil, I started off getting his ultra classic albums like Harvest, After the Goldrush, Zuma, Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere etc... Then one day I was looking online for more Young and for a while I didn't even consider getting this one at first, because I heard he had some decent albums that I probably wouldn't even give a chance to, but I gave it a shot, listened to On the Beach on this very website and poof! I had to get it. Then I listened to it back to back for the first time and it rocked! This album makes me respect and enjoy Neil Young even more. He is pretty much tied with Bowie being my favorite two singer/song writers. Get On the Beach and blast your speakers out! Neil Young is the man!
Free Music Review: Finally out, in all its glory Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this album about six months ago on vinyl, and on the first listen I knew this was the best Neil has ever done. I have waited patiently all summer as the release was pushed back and back, and now its here and better than I imagined. This collection, as I said just now, is the best in Neil Young's extensive canon. Every song is incredible, and I hold it in higher esteem than the more-lauded "Tonight's the Night." This album is a much more personal exploration on Young's part, whereas "Tonight's the Night" was a eulogy for Danny Whitten and the hippie dream. Why Neil has waited so long to release this and the other three "missing" albums I'll never know, and probably no one but Neil will. But all that is now moot, because this (along with the phenomenal "Hawks and Doves" and "Re-Ac-Tor") is now released from its vinyl prison. Hopefully "Time Fades Away" will be Neil's next CD project.
