Free Music Notes for Sugar Mountain-Live At Canterbury House 1968 (CD/DVD-A)Free Music Review: are you serious? neils best live recording yet,STOP WHINGING Hit: 5 Stars
Are you guys who give this amazing release less than 5 stars serious??...gee wiz, good golly, is this a case of only seeing the glass as half full or what?? sure i was dissapointed by the lack of dvd footage, but we did find ourselves watching the snow float around neil on the dvd screen, whilst listening to this, very hypnotising..not even my girlfriend spoke once during the playing of this beautiful album,(which is amazing hahaha)..Ive been collecting every neil recording i can find ever since the mid 1970,s and all those bootleg recordings on swinging pig, so basically ive heard it all when it comes to neil..but never have i heard these recordings, and never have i heard anything from neil during this period..Take my advice this is simply stunning stuff, neil as we have never heard him.he is so young here, playing in front of a very small crowd.talking non stop between songs..and what songs they are..a big bunch of rarely played tracks from the springfeild and his first album..at least half of which he was rarely to perform ever again, if ever..THIS IS ESSENTIAL 5 STAR NEIL YOUNG AND THATS A FACT
Free Music Review: A wonderful trip down memory lane Hit: 5 Stars
In a time when so many artists are opting to cash in with reissues filled with stuff fans already have or "American Songbook" albums filled with songs that don't suit them, it's a real treat to hear songs that I could recite in my sleep in a format that's crisp and fresh. (OK -- even though we've all heard Sugar Mountain a million times, it's fun to hear the spoken intro for the first time.)
The warmth and intimacy of this unique performance come shining through 40 years later. It might not serve as the best intro to Neil's music, but for long time fans it's a treasure. (For those of you needing an intro to Neil, see if you can borrow Decade from your dad then decide if this CD is for you. If your dad is too old for Neil, and you don't already know his music, just go back to your Abba LPs.)
Don't pay any attention to the crybabies who are whining about the DVD. Sure it's audio-only, but come on, check out the price. You're essentially getting the DVD for free, so get over it.
Free Music Review: Wow!!! Vintage Neil Young from a Simpler Time. Hit: 5 Stars
This is the third in the Neil Young Achieve Series. Recorded when he was just 22 years old, Neil plays his songs and tells anecdotes with "the kid next door" type innocence and humility. The slight hiss of the analog recording sourced from a two track tape of Neil's seems to only add to the recording - a kind of warmth that you'd get from a fireplace. This and the Massey Hall cd are absolute must have cds for the Neil young fan.
My only complaint about this cds and the other Achieve Series cds is the packaging, a cardboard sleeve that doesn't fully close allowing any dust or whatever to go in and dirty the cd. Come on record company! Such truly special recordings need truly special packaging like a deluxe plastic or wood case. The packaging of these cds, in my opinion, actually cheapens the look of the product. Neil's work has obviously withstood the test of time, so why not package it in packaging that will stand the test of time? Neil and the fans deserve better!
Free Music Review: An early recording of a wonderful voice Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this for a friend after my brother
sent me one. It's a great CD, from Neil Young's
concert in a coffee house in Ann Arbor back
in the mid to late 60s. Don't buy it expecting
lots of concert video. And I'm not sure I have
the technology sensitive enough to pick up the
enhanced quality of a DVD-audio recording. But
the sound on both discs is fine and it makes
me wish all the more that Neil hadn't canceled
his Kansas City concert date this past November
and attended a high tech conference in San Fran
instead to discuss his Lincoln revitalization
100+ mpg car project (being built in a Wichita,
Kansas, garage). Well, he's got an inimitable
style, it's great to hear his early voice, and
may he keep strumming and singing for many,
many years, or, in the words of CSNY, long
may he run...
Free Music Review: shakey is a god Hit: 5 Stars
in spite of what others have said i heard absolutely NO hiss anywhere on my cd..... I LOVE IT !! i WAS disappointed the dvd was not advertised as music only as someone else mentioned, tho.
as far as someone making comments on Neil's commenting thru out give me a break...he was 22 years old at the time.....i LOVED hearing him speak and tell his stories.
also, as far as who bitched about him raking in millions by releasing stuff this guy thinks he should not, who cares? ITS HIS MUSIC..... why shouldn't he get money for his work?? No One is forcing you to buy it so chill the F out with the judgments on his money. key word: H I S.
With all the time, work and money he continues to put into Bridge School, which is immense, and which he started and grew with his wife Pegi, why begrudge the guy financially.....
If you are a true NY fan you will LOVE this CD. period.
