Free Music Notes for BlacklistedFree Music Review: Dreamy Vocals Backed by a Stellar Band Hit: 5 StarsI had the pleasure of seeing Neko Case perform in the intimate setting of a bar in St. Louis, MO in February 2003 and though I was already a fan of her music, this performance drew me in further. Neko's voice alone is enough to mesmerize; it's clarity and strength filled the air while her highly talented band backed her with haunting melodies played with technically sound grace. The music is not just a background to her voice, though. It shines on its own merit. This CD is by far my fave of her releases. The melodies are memorable with a dream-like quality and her voice is full of passion splashed with a bit of longing. On first listen I was not completely drawn in, but after a couple of plays this CD became a regular in the player. Like others, I can't imagine why Neko Case is not getting radio play. Based on the crowd in the bar, I can say she has a big following and anyone I have introduced to her music has been pleased. Oh, well. Guess it's better if it remains our little secret. Incidentally, one of the opening acts was also stellar: Carolyn Mark and the Roommates. Another fellow Canadian-born alt.country singer with a flexible voice, Carolyn Mark was highly entertaining, engaging, and sings catchy tunes you find yourself humming on the way home. Check her out, too!
Free Music Review: Wow! Hit: 5 StarsNeko Case has a magnificient voice and she writes good lyrics. I wish I had known about this singer before. I highly recommend Blacklisted. If you thought you wouldn't like country music this will change your idea of what "country music" is or can be.
Free Music Review: Recommended if you like.. Hit: 4 StarsIt's a pretty good cd. Her voice sounds somewhat similar to bettie serveert. check out lamprey if you want a little more rocking-sound.
Free Music Review: reverb Hit: 4 StarsThis cd is really growing on me but the high level of reverb on her voice throughout the disc can be real distracting.
Free Music Review: Awesome Awesome Awesome! Hit: 5 StarsLet me say this right up front. I do not like country-music. I'll listen to just about anything but. Nick Drake, John Coltrane, King Crimson,Miles Davis, The Cure, Stravinsky, Zappa, Bartok are more suited to my tastes. Neko Case is "alternative country" whatever that means. I heard a segment about this inspiring woman on NPR last week. She's haunted by American dreams and full of endless gratitude for others who have helped along the way and the situations life has hurled at her. Neko opens up things in me that were previously inaccessible. Maybe it's because we seem to have lived in the same parts of the country (Seattle, Chicago region, and Tucson) and pick up the same vibes? ...
