Free Music Notes for Nellyville AlbumFree Music Review: "NELLYVILLE" IS NOT A PLACE THAT I'D LIKE TO VISIT Hit: 1 StarsWith his slurred,"Country Grammar" slanglistics and pretty boy features,Cornell Haynes a.k.a. Nelly has been the most commerically successful rapper of the last two or three years following possibly only a certain blue-eyed Dr. Dre-affilated rapper. But does commerical appeal equate with artistic merits? Gazing at the state of mainstream rap circa 2002.Quite frankly, both you and I know the answer to that question.Following the unexpected multi-platinum success of his 2000 debut,"Country Grammar",Nelly returns with "Nellyville". "Nellyville" like it's highly successful predocessor relies on catchy hooks, midtempo bass-heavy beats, and unabrasive lyrics that are shamelessy cocky and materialistic yet not too smart or lethal. It's obvious that they aren't trying to go over the head of the "TRL" auidence. With all these elements,Nelly pulls off a sophomore album that non-suprisingly sounds VERY similar to "Country Grammar". From the fairly cringe-worthy first single "Hot In Herre" on which the adventrous Neptunes give a standard R&B-ish beat over Nelly's slurred, pokey ryhmes and a female vocalist cooing a cutesy,radio-ready hook."Pimp Juice" and "The Gank" are unfourtnaly laughable with Nelly trying to pull off an even more singy-song delivery. The so-contrived "Work It" featuring N'Sync's Justin Timberlake is as trite as you'd expect. Other than that,"Nellyville" hits you off with a lot of filler and songs so silly that one can't help but wonder,"This can't be this silly sounding".I've praised Nelly before on "Country Grammar" for showing more personality and determention-something that a lot of current pop stars at his level are devoid off.But on "Nellyville",those two traits are wasted on safe,surburban-approved,nonesenical mainstream rap that not only slows down Nelly's musical progress but is yet another subpar release that the currently in a coma hip hop doesn't really need. "Nellyville" proves a sad thing for a current rap release. No bite.No assertiveness. No real originality.Just fluff. And unfournately that latter word sums up the majority of current mainstream rap releases.
