Free Music Review: Riding rollercoasters into the ocean...
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is like walking into your teenage bedroom, finding old journals and reading through them, then falling asleep on the floor, waking up in a blurry reality, trying to remember the bits and pieces of the crazy dream you just had about riding a demonic carousel in an abandoned fairground.
That said, this album is a journey into giddiness and despair and back again. Songs bleed in and out of each other, woven together with some of the best songwriting you will find anywhere:

"Someone is waiting to swallow all the halos out of you
As your face blows through my windows
Sending pieces flying all around my room
And I love you and I want to
Shoot down all the superheroes from your skies..."

If you're looking into NMH because of Aeroplane Over the Sea, please start here. The mood this album evokes- the songwriting, the kaliedoscope of feelings explored- will not let you down.

Free Music Review: Excellent debut LP
Hit: 5 Stars

Jeff Mangum comes out in full force for this early indie release. I heard "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" before hearing this album, and while i generally regard that album as being amongst the Top 3 greatest ever created, this is a superb album that'd rank at least in my Top 20. The "fuzzy" sound that Elephant Six is known for, is executed masterfully even though this is the band's first full-length album.

There is not a bad song on this record and it blends together perfectly. In fact, when i hear one of the songs out of context on my iPod, i always start thinking about the next song and have to listen to the album in sequence. The only song that i'm not able to listen to over and over is "Pree Sisters Swallowing a Donkey's Eye", and that's just because of the length.

Overall, this album is fantastic and well worth purchasing if you are a fan of music.

Free Music Review: Just as good - if not better - than In the Aeroplane
Hit: 5 Stars

I would only recommend On Avery Island to fans of Neutral Milk Hotel who have already become familiar with their more successful and higher praised album, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. On Avery Island is a little more difficult to adapt to than the band's final album; that said, it certainly holds its own when compared to Aeroplane, as it holds the key to what made that album so incredible- Jeff Mangum's frighteningly honest lyrics. With perhaps the exception of the closing track (a 13 minute noise-fest that tests the ears of even the most open-minded of listeners), On Avery Island is entirely enjoyable and every bit as moving as Aeroplane. In fact, such songs as Gardenhead and Naomi bring me back to this album more often than what is considered by many to be the band's prime achievement. If you enjoyed In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, pick this one up- you're sure to love it.

Free Music Review: i was wrong...
Hit: 5 Stars

this is actually a lot better than _aeroplane_! first of all, i like every track (as opposed to its successor's rather weak fast numbers, "ghost" and "holland, 1945"). secondly, since the lyrics are less cryptic, the songs hit you (well, me) a lot harder. i've decided that this is the most depressing album i've ever heard. and finally, and most importantly, although the abrupt shifts of _aeroplane_ are fun, this really feels unified. "you've passed" and "someone is waiting" are basically one song, "a baby for pree" and "where you'll find me now" have the same tune (although different rhythms), and so on.

by the way, try listening to this when you're not quite awake... the beginning of "gardenhead" will hit you in the head like a sledgehammer.

Free Music Review: A four-track player + pure genius
Hit: 5 Stars

Neutral Milk Hotel is a band for people who like music with a soul and a lot of guts - just the way music should be. The exact opposite of those awful techno and pop sounds that are polluting the airwaves out there. This album picks you up and shakes you down, leaving you naked and hopeless in a few minutes. The lyrics are just the best since Michael Stipe in his prime. Jeff Mangum is a poet and full-blown musician. NMH's second album (In the Aeroplane Over the Sea) is just as good (if not better) and more well-crafted than this one. But both of them are a must for anyone who enjoys the far-from-dead rock n' roll (with a twist). It's a sound so strong that caught me over here in Brazil. Also try Olivia Tremor Control, Pavement, Guided By Voices and, the father of all, R.E.M.
