Hit or Miss? New Found Glory (NFG) has definitely got a hit with their newest album "Sticks and Stones." The punk band from Florida has yet again impressed fans with this new album. In 1997 this pop punk band was formed, starting their epic journey of punk domination. The band consists of: Jordan on vocals, Cyrus on drums, Ian on bass, and Steve and Chad on guitar. NFG describes themselves as just normal guys who can relate to their fans. They too listened to punk music when they were younger, and still do. Like many other new bands they were inspired by punk legends NOFX. This is easy to understand as NFG's music follows the same sound as NOFX. From teenagers to guys in their early 20's it is no wonder that most or all of the songs they write are about girls and relationships. They released their debut album in 1997, on an independent label, appropriately named "It's All About the Girls." Four albums later they've got a surefire hit. "Sticks and Stones" is hands down a level above the previous four albums.This newest installment of New Found Glory continues to maintain true to their original sound. Some may say that "Stick and Stones" sounds different from their previous albums, which I believe is false. The same attitude and emotion is behind the lyrics and the sound. NFG has simply matured, in life and in their music. The two complement each other. Their music has become more mature as they have matured in life. The band describes themselves as normal guys who are just like their fans, and it shows in their music. Some people are saying that the new album is slower than previous albums. The only difference is the guys have learnt their instruments better and don't have to play power chords the whole way through. "Sticks and Stones," continues the upbeat tempo of NFG. The new album sports more melodies than previous ones, an improvement that the band was looking for. The new album offers more songs that are easier to sing along to at concerts with various catchy choruses. Also noticeable is the improvement in Jordan's voice. He has changed his voice since the last album, and I believe it's for the better. If you can't hear the development in NFG's music then you must have some serious earwax build-up. The maturity in the lyrics, vocals and instruments all contribute to an album that has no bad songs. All the songs are good and the album can be played straight through.
"Sticks and Stones" really relates to NFG's fans. The trials and tribulations that we go through are all mirrored in the lyrics of this new album. Many people go to music as a way to vent or clear their head. Listening to the lyrics of this album can make it easier during the hard times. I'm sure many of NFG's fans can vouch for me on this one. NFG gets their point across in a clear and obvious way. There is no guessing or games in the songs, they are straight forward and to the point. On "Sticks and Stones", the songs are more diverse than previous albums. There are songs about Jordan's dead grandpa, about moving away from home, and about enjoying life. While the majority of the songs are still about girls, NFG wouldn't be NFG if they weren't singing about girls.
Certain songs on the album give out important messages to all listeners. "My Friends Over You", for example. This song is a classic song about boys and girlfriends, and how in tough times your friends will always be there. It explains how in rough times it's easier to go to your friends. Friendship is key! Friends never let you down, and are always there for you. This is no more obvious than in the following verse.
You we're everything I wanted,
But I just can't finish what I started
There's no room left here on my back
It was damaged long ago
Though you swear that you are true
I'd still pick my friends over you
Lines like this define the album for what it is: a metaphor of life. "My Friends Over You" is a classic NFG song. Kids need to hear songs like this. These types of songs have the ability to instantly make someone feel good about a bad situation. Another great example of an impact song would be "Never Give Up." The song explains to enjoy life.

This song can turn a frown upside down. It sounds cheesy but it's true. The sixth track, "It's Been A Summer", talks about summer flings. Undoubtedly this song was probably inspired by something that happened to one of the band members. That's what makes NFG's music so good, it's real. "Sonny" is a sadder, slower song. This song shows the versatility of the album, as the carefree band gives a tribute to Jordan's departed grandpa. I'm sure this song hit a lot of kids who've lost loved ones. I also bet it made them feel a bit better in their hard time.
"Sticks and Stones" will hit everyone who listens to it on a personal level. It did for me. Many of the songs inspired me to live life to the fullest. I don't really know why the songs inspire me, they just do. Maybe it's the adrenaline rush that I get when blaring the album in my car. Maybe it's how the songs have got me through rough times of life. The incredible lyrics of "Sticks and Stones" alone, make this album worth buying. The lyrics are only backed up by an upbeat tempo filled with mesmerizing melodies. So do your ears a favor and jump on the NFG ride of life.

No, Blink-182's first choice of opening band have a firm grasp of the puerile: Sticks and Stones churns out dumb punk thrills at such a breakneck pace, you'd swear they were going out of fashion. The chugging "It's Been a Summer" does Blink as well as Travis, Mark, and Tom do themselves, while "Head-On Collision" displays the group's tender emo side, frontman Jordan Pundik smarting at a vicious relationship spat. "It feels like I'm bruised and broken / From our head-on collision," he sobs, as guitars crunch and blunder madly in the background. Thing is, although some of the tunes are spot on--particularly, the lovestruck "My Friend's Over You" and the moshpit-friendly "Something I Call Personality"--there's little to radically distinguish New Found Glory from their peers. If you're a diehard pop-punk fan, you've probably got records like this--and better--in your collection already. --Louis Pattison
