OK, this sums up the negative part of my comments, let's get to the relevant part:

The Grand Ole Band of the Eighties is back, after a veeery long break where the band members followed solo projects & avoided each other's faces. "REPUBLIC"had shown very clearly that they gotten sick & tired of each other...- and of the expectations that still seemed to weigh on their shoulders back at the time.

The break has done wonders: No need to be hip anymore, no need to prove anything anymore; these guys - by now - are legends in their own right and can do what they well please. This is excellent, because for the first time you get the feeling that Bernie & Co. are simply having a ball playing together & throwing together a chock full of great tunes & showing each other what they have picked up during their solo efforts (like new ideas `n friends like Billy Corgan & Bobby Gillespie) & letting everybody share into the good vibes. These guys really wanted to do GET READY, period. And within this upbeat spirit, GET READY may actually be New Order's best effort since POWER, CORRUPTION & LIES.

For most of the Eighties, I classified N.O. as a great singles/EP band that issued longplayers only reluctantly. P,C&L was a landmark, true enough, and TECHNIQUE a nifty, acid-house driven kudo to the emerging Nineties. But the other efforts were mostly 3-4 good-to-great tunes plus percussion/synth/bass driven fillers per pop...uh..vynil. The singles were the highlights (anybody wonder why the compilation SUBSTANCE rates higher than most of the conventional albums ?). I mean, New Order is strongly remembered for its sound, but only a small amount of individual songs. Weird, but not untypical for the Eighties.

What impresses me most about GET READY is the song-writing effort that went into it...& successfully so. No, don't worry - it still is difficult to find a true "chorus" in their songs - and their sound is still unique & distinct & instantly recognizeable & Hookie's bass sings as ever. But they have learned over the years to transform their songs into a much tighter, focussed affair! And whoa Nelly, these guys were really eager to get it going this time

In general: Like every New Order longplayer, you've got to give it at least a couple plus of listenings to get into the groove. That's the price you gotta pay. Once you're in (and it ain't difficult at all...)...weeell...

In detail: The first 4 songs are absolute killer tunes. Special attention to "Vicious Streak" - after almost 20 year they have found the perfect sequel to "Your silent face". "Crystal" is well known & commented by now. "60 miles an hour" is a sleeper - that roars ! "Turn my way" features Billy Corgan - listen to his contribution and you'll realize how incredibly compact & unique the New Order sound is. The Smashing Pumpkin star is actually struggling to hold his own among Bernie, Hookie & the gang.
And with "Primitive Notion", the real surprises start: Here is N.O. revisiting Joy Division - the first 15 seconds actually unsettle you & you keep waiting for Ian Curtis' ghost to step up to the microphone. Pity only that the tune itself turns out not quite as strong as the outstanding material that has gone before. But the groove, dude, THAT groove... "Slow Jam"and "Rock Shack" are firecrackers. In the former, Bernie actually howls out the the chorus to the song (Bernie...howling...timestheyareachanging ...); in the latter, Bobby Gillespie is able to leave his mark ("Rocks"-time, and it rocks !), well, barely. Great stuff.
"Someone like you"...great sound & groove, catchy tune & chorus, but Bernie's initial singing that leads to the chorus almost blows the song - very schlocky & forced. This maybe only a total of a minute out of the song, but without this, we'd have a classic here. As is, just very good. "Close Range", finally & towards the end, is the first filler I have been able to find. A pretty good filler with a pretty viscious groove, but a rather conventional, common tune. Well, after what they have shown so far, a deserved breather.
But hold on & be rewarded with a true treat. "Rune wild", or: the successor to the successor of "Your silent face". A pop jewel that goes down like champagne and goes Todd Rundgren towards the end...and rewards us with the most exhilarating final minute to a record that New Order were ever able to provide. "Good times around the corner" ! How true !
Oh, BTW - don't expect too much from Bernie's lyrics. Same bittersweet, nonsensical stuff as ever. But then again, New Order was never about lyrics anyway, now isn't it ?

Conclusion: An 8-years break that was worth it. POWER, CORRUPTION & LIES is the effort I will always admire New Order for - but what I will be listening to 5 years from now is GET READY, nothing else. Enough said ?
