Free Music Notes for New York DollsFree Music Review: Nevermind the corporate sisses Hit: 5 Stars
"[T]hey're not very good players and that bloke can't sing" - Mick Jagger, Creem, August '74.
A mascaraed Frankenstein, this: Back In The USA w/o the chops; Exile On Main Street w/o the soul - pumping up Stooges' slouch, anticipating Ramones raunch. Cruddy sublime fun, the eternal bar band on Route 66. Like the Pistols, the Dolls' liabilities and limitations ARE their hippest attributes. There IS a reason everyone Hail Mary's this album! "Personality Crisis," "Trash," "Pills" and "Private World" are nothing short of Chuck Berry.
And the much maligned production? Hey, considering "The Locomotion," it coulda been a WHOLE lot worse!
Free Music Review: Welcome to the dollhouse Hit: 5 Stars
The New York Dolls are one of the greatest bands to ever walk the streets of this planet. I actually got their second album, "Too Much Too Soon" first and liked it, but the debut is far superior. It's also one of the greatest rock albums I've ever heard. There's not a single dud song on this one. NYD is where the Rolling Stones ended and Aerosmith began. The songs are excellent: poetic and grungy at the same time. "Frankenstein" is the best. David Johansen is one of my favorite singers. The epitome of glam-rock cannot be expressed in mere words. If you have only $20 as your life savings, use it to buy this CD. Got it?
Free Music Review: WHEN I SAY I'M IN LOVE, YOU BEST BELEIVE I'M IN LOVE...L-U-V Hit: 5 Stars
This little gem introduced the world to the Dolls, too bad the world wasn't ready for them. I don't care how deep the Velvet Underground's songwriting was, or how violent and ludicrous the Stooges were. The New York Dolls were the definitive punk band. And this album stands to that testament. This is the band at it's best, before the drugs and Rundgren hit. Every song is mind blowing, so I won't single any out. If you like the Stones, buy this, if you like punk, buy this, if you like plain ol' good rock, buy this, and if you just like good music in general, buy this. It stands the test of time, and should be included in every music collection.
Free Music Review: This Album Defies Criticism Hit: 5 Stars
From the opening guitar chords, howls, and piano runs (Thank you Todd Rundgeren) of "Personality Crisis" to the closing chorus of "Jet Boy" the N.Y. Dolls have come up with the absolute blueprint of what was to change popular music in five years time. The Dolls were the future of rock and roll and many critics refused to acknowledge their warped and powerful message: Live life like it's a flash of light. Unfortunately that message is what led to their quick demise. This disc contains eleven of modern rock's most powerful tracks and no serious Punk collector should be without it!
Free Music Review: Rock'n Roll ! Hit: 5 Stars
Half-Rolling Stones , half-Sex Pistols , New York Dolls is definitly a band you need to check out . Their debut album , full of life , energy and enthusiasm , is exactly what Rock'n Roll should have never ceased to be . Critics often say that The Stooges are the godfathers of Punk , yet many songs on this record sound exactly like what The Ramones , The Pistols (and even The Clash on "Trash") would do years later . "Personality Crisis" and "Jet Boy" are probably the greatest tracks , but all the songs are pretty good and often catchy . A very good CD overall .
