Free Music Notes for One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even ThisFree Music Review: Best Stones album since Draw The Line! Hit: 5 Stars
"Evolution is obsolete" - no joke!
The lifts here are fearless: Faces, Stones, Cheap Trick, Neil Young, even themselves! Hey, that's primordial! Sure, any 24-year-old bonehead coulda made this album but, that's not the point; it requires genius to get this much elemental noise outta 50-year-olds.
As Johansen recently told Perfect Sound Forever (online) mag, "[Y]ou bring so much experience to things when you go through life. It's one of the hardest things to try to create is lack of experience when you have it." Nevertheless, he (and they) DID IT.
Best reunion EVER.
Seeing Jack Douglas' name on the cover didn't inspire my confidence and that AOR intro on the 1st tune had me sure nervous. But the instant Johansen's rasp oozes all over the verse, whew, I sure KNEW. "Who could imagine this when I was young" - like hell YEAH.
And, jeez, does Johansen look HOT on the cover! Damn! Wish I was gay!
Free Music Review: Welcome back David and Sylvain. Hit: 5 Stars
This is an outstanding rock and roll album. There are no filler songs. "Dance Like a Monkey" is a "great" single but at least 9 other songs can be catagorized as "really really good." Do not just enjoy the beat however, Johansen's dexterity with the language produces lyrics which are funny and sharp. Although Thunders, Kane, Nolan and Murcia were important to the original Dolls, I have always argued that David Johansen and Sylvain were the heart of the group. David and Syl in fact continued to tour succesfully and produce excellent albums for several years after the Dolls broke up. Think of this album as the natural successor to the first 2 post Dolls albums ("D.J." and "In Style"). My hope is that we will see another NYD album and perhaps a reissue of the David Johansen Group's first 2 studio albums on CD. Finally, check out the animated video on line for "Dance Like a Monkey." Even my wife (who HATES the New York Dolls) reluctantly admitted that it was "amusing."
Free Music Review: NY DOLLS ROCK! Hit: 5 Stars
This new album is so amazingly incredible... I wasn't too sure what to think and actually hesitated before really listening to it. I love the Dolls and have loved them for AGES! When I finally started listening to the album it wasn't til about a month or so after I got this. I caved in a bit and thought there were some catchy tunes but wasn't hooked right off the bat. But the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me and I started listening "deeper". Then finding out that they were playing I just HAD to go!!
Seeing them live doing all their old stuff as well as a TON of stuff from this new album was so amazing! Seeing them live will convince you that these guys are the real thing and that this album wasn't about trying to be who they were - it's about showing the world how they've evolved and how awesome they are NOW!
Now I listen to the album and love it all!! I can't think of a song on there that I don't like!
Free Music Review: The Dolls Keep on Rockin After all These Years Hit: 5 Stars
When I first heard that the New York Dolls were going to come out with their first cd in 32 years I was bracing myself for a Disaster! WOW, was I WRONG! This CD ROCKS! They Sound as good as they did way back when! I love that the music is original music and not remakes or a rehash of their previous albums. The Standout Cut for me is The Rainbow Store. The Bonus DVD is also Intersting to watch and its amazing that they were evn able to get a cd made considering what all the band has been through(Well , the last two original members anyway). I went to a cd signing for the band at Tower Records on Sunset Blvd and the Dolls Put on a really great performance and at the cd signing, they were very nice and took the time to sign memorabilia that their fans brought(over 300 fans showed up and the store acutally ran ouf of wristands)! I just hope it doesnt take another 32 years for their next cd!
Free Music Review: Better than I was hoping for. Hit: 5 Stars
I purchased this CD because the New York Dolls are one of my all-time favorite bands. I planned to purchase it simply to say "Thanks" for some great memories. But, I was pleasantly surprised.
Is this CD as good as their first two albums? ("New York Dolls" and "Too Much Too Soon") Probably not. But, this album is MUCH better than I was expecting. I was not disappointed at all!
So, if you do not have their first two albums, you should probably purchase them first to see what all the shouting was about.
If you are already familiar with their earlier albums, then you probably have this one already.
Also, I'd recommend purchasing the actual CD (vs. an MP3 download of the CD) because the "Making of ..." DVD that is included is a nice touch.
Enjoy!
