Free Music Notes for One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even ThisFree Music Review: take it for what it is. Hit: 4 Stars
as a rock and roll buff, of course i love the two new york dolls albums from the early 70's. both of them are musts for all rock and roll collections. however; when i first saw that this new album was out, i was not interested, was not going to get it. johnny thunders is of course dead, the new york dolls can never be the new york dolls again. i loved david johansen's two albums with the harry smiths, still this attempt to go backward seemed ill advised to common sense. then i saw this cd turn up on mojo magazines top 50 albums of the year (somewhere around 27th, i believe). so i thought, okay; i'll give it a try - can always kill myself if it sucks. well, it doesn't suck. if i look at it as the work of a new rock and roll band that i've never heard before, then it is a very enjoyable slice of retro-rock with lots of predictable and endearing guitar licks on good songs that are passionately sung by a man who has a voice made for rock and roll. take it for what it is: not classic (like the 'real' new york dolls albums), but an excellent rock record all the same.
Free Music Review: New York Dolls - 'One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This' (Roadrunner) Hit: 4 Stars
Hard to believe, but this thirteen track CD is the first all-new material effort by the NY Dolls (well, the two-still living members vocalist,David Johansen and guitarist Sylvain Sylvain)in over thirty years now. So,technically speaking, it's their virtual follow-up to '74's 'Too Much Too Soon'. Most impressive cuts are "Running Around", the catchy "Dance Like A Monkey" (just gotta love the video),"Fishnets & Cigarettes",the bluesy "I Ain't Got Nothin'" and "Gimme Luv And Turn On The Light".Some might tag this music as New York-style glam punk. But, that's a good thing. There's also a DVD that features forty minutes of backstage footage, rehearsal and interview. Very nice. Recommended.
Free Music Review: back to the rock jungle Hit: 4 Stars
I will remember "the Dolls" for more than the debut in 1973 with songs like "personality crises" and the second album with songs like "stranded in the jungle".The album "one day it will please us to remember even this" is the best album yet, well produced and mixed by Jack Douglas." the Dolls"
has been better musicians over the years and is not so revolutionary now.Its a pop-party album with rock touch and some various ballads. The best tracks are punishing world, gotta get away from tommy, and running around which is miles better than the rolling stones has been recorded the last 10 years so i will always remember this record as the best new york dolls ever did?
Free Music Review: Good Kickass Rock Hit: 4 Stars
This is a good, solid kickass Rock'N'Roll album. For years I've heard of the Dolls, but thanks to DVDs & the Internet I've gotten to see how great they were & are! And a fresh NEW album to boot! No rehash of old tunes or cover tunes here. The first song "We Are In Love" is an EXCELLENT opening cut, "Punishing World" is killer, and "Take a Good Look At My Good Looks" is a real nice rolling rhythm. I'd recommend this album to anybody & the DVD is cool to watch. It's great to know that there are real Rock'N'Roll bands out there putting out new rockable music.
Free Music Review: We're all pleased they're recording Hit: 4 Stars
The album is strongest in its versatility. From the quick tempo'd "Gotta Get Away from Tommy" to the mellow "Maimed Happiness," all emotions are addressed. The accompanying video gives great visuals of the band recording the songs. "Dancing on the Lip of a Volcano" comes on and I picture David Johanson and Michael Stipe singing into their mikes. I love it. The video also shows the gratified spirit that went into the recording of this album. Johanson seems genuinely pleased to be singing for his Dolls again.
