Free Music Notes for ThriveFree Music Review: An Awesome Album!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this cd because of "It Is You" and expected it to be okay, but I got way more than I expected. This cd is now my favorite cd and I can't stop playing it.
Giving It Over: this song, in my opinion, isn't too original. It's got a cool beat and drive, but it's kind of a mixed-up clone of their hit "Joy". However, if the lyrics don't take you, the music will.
Live In Stereo: it took me a few listens to understand this one, but it's a really awesome song. Interesting metaphor.
Million Pieces: the first slowish song, but this may be the best song on the cd. It talks about laying down your burdens, and is a beautiful song. The 'boys have a way of changing from a minor to a major key in a way no one else can.
Thrive: this is a great song, talking about the dependance on God and how that makes you "thrive". another kinda slowish song.
Rescue: this song is so disco it sounds like some sort of Mario Nintendo game theme...but the lyrics are good.
It Is You: Not a really profound song, but it concentrates on just worshipping and adoring God. Great worship song.
Cornelius: this is actually a really funny song, with an underlying message about wanting to be "core-strong like a centurion".
The Fad Of The Land: my personal favorite. Again, the minor-to-major change captures the listener. Cool riff.
John Woo: perhaps the most techno song ever made. I have no idea what it's about...but I think the Newsboys themselves were quoted as having no idea what it was about either. I guess us Americans will never know who John Woo is. Awesome music.
Lord (I Don't Know): the cd closes another awesome slowish worship song. Good lyrics, good music, nothing wrong with this song.
I recommend this album for anyone who wants a good Christian rock album, whether you're a "die-hard" N-boys fan or not.
Free Music Review: thrive by itself Hit: 5 Stars
Forget comparing this CD to other Newsboys releases. In my opnion, it blows away every other Newsboys cd (or any other contemporay christian pop/rock band, for that matter). But if you look at it by itself, it looks even better. Starting form the top: Giving it Over-Pop/Rock, opens up Thrive with a happy sounds and a catchy melody Live in Stereo: Pop/Rock, I'd give this cd 5 stars just for the lttle sound that plays in the intro of this song...plus it has the best lyrics in any song ever: 'the best laid plans are in my other pants"! Seriously, tho, this is an upbeat song about living completely for God. Great content, great music. Million Pieces: Pop, The Chorus in this song is amazing, very encouraging. The best track on the album. Thrive: Pop, the negative and dark verses strakly contrast with the rising chorus. Rescue: Pop/Rock, definitly one of the better tracks on the album. The chorus is infectious, and it's backed up by a solid poppy sound It Is You: Worship, I'm not too big a fan of worship music but the Newsboys put their spin on it and out comes "It Is You". Cornelius: Rock, the only true rocking song on the album, Cornelius is that chirstian everyoen wants to and should be. On of the less serious songs on the album, but definitly the best. Fad of the Land: Pop/Rock, like the first two tracks and Cornelius, a pop/rock song that doesn't take itself too seriously. Great stuff. John Woo: ????, chances are this will be the only track you skip over...it'sd about a bee in a limo... Lord (I Don't Know): Worship, great song aobut the future/worship song. Like all the others, the chorus wills tick in your head. Great ending ot a great cd.
Free Music Review: A rarity beyond all means Hit: 5 Stars
I never heard of the Newsboys until like three months ago (4/02) when I was searching through new bands to listen to when I heard "Joy" by the Newsboys. Good song and I decided to look for more stuff by them. I eventually stumbled onto their website and heard the smash, It Is You, probably one of the best songs I have heard in a while. I was never into Christian music but this song was amazingly beautiful and passionate. Yes, I wanted more. So I bought Thrive, put it in my CD player and haven't stopped listening to it since. Every single one of these songs is catchy, enjoyable and unstoppable. There are not many albums out there where you can like every song on the album but this is definitely one of them. If you are not a Newsboys fan, you need to get with the program because this is the album of the year. Ranges from the rockin and snarly pop (Giving It Over and Fad Of The Land) to the peppy and free (Million Pieces and Rescue) to the passionate and goosebump-giving (Thrive, It Is You and Lord I Don't Know) to the just plain fun and strange (Live In Stereo, Cornelius and John Woo). The lyrics were just right, the melodies are awesome and this is my new Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and U2's The Joshua Tree (my two favorite albums of all time). How can you compare to that?
Free Music Review: Peter Furler and Phil Joel are Amazing! Hit: 5 Stars
This album has it all: Great contrast, superb lyrics, fun songs, serious songs, and four hardrocking, talented, committed to Christ guys make this CD a must own."Giving It Over" slams! "Live In Stereo" quakes! "Million Pieces" should be a hit on secular stations to this day. It will always be a hit in the Christian community...Yeah! "Thrive" kicks, but mellowly (a little slow down to an on fire presentation)! "Rescue" picks it back up! "It's in your bones, like it's DNA" "It Is You" Yes it is Lord! We adore you! Peter Furler has a voice that just can't be matched...so don't even try. "Cornelius" is just good clean fun! Enjoy this masterpiece of silly creative writing. And what the heck does rhyme with Cornelius? "The Fad Of The Land" is great. Read the lyrics closely; what a wake up call. "John Woo" is why bands like Newsboys need a bodyguard...that and the bumble-bee trapped in the limo. "Lord (I Don't Know) is an excellent finish to a great CD. Now, if you've read this review, what are you waiting for? Get it! Don't make me come over there! See ya next review! www.therunninggirl.com
Free Music Review: The BEST Christian Pop/Rock Album Period! Hit: 5 Stars
First of all, there are many great and wonderful Christian artists: Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant, Third Day, Steven Curtis Chapman, Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, and Mercyme. But this album has the variety of songs that make it easy to listen to again and again. I have to admit, there's a LOT of 80s style sounds in here (maybe that's another reason I like it so much). This would be a great album to share with others who might not already listen to Christian music--to show them how good it can be. "Living in Stereo" sounds like a mix between an old Stray Cats song and something off the Valley Girl soundtrack--WHICH ISN'T A BAD THING, really! My personal favorites are "A Million Pieces" and "Thrive," two great songs about turning your cares over to Him and how alive we feel when we are close to Him. "It is You" is an awesome worship song with a strong anthemic chorus. "Cornelius" is grand--"some get christened with a righteous-sounding name." ALL TEN SONGS are worthy of this album. I have to agree with another reviewer, this is like U2's The Joshua Tree in stature. If you don't enjoy this album, then what could you POSSIBLY enjoy listening to?
