Free Music Notes for ThriveFree Music Review: An Incredible CD Hit: 5 Stars
Thrive is undeniably a new step for the Newsboys, mixing rock with pop, getting what I like to call "hard pop." It's not quite rock, but it's not [weak] like most pop. "Giving It Over" is a fast, hard-hitting opener, while "Thrive," which is the middle track, moves the album along with a steady, yet slow beat, and "Lord (I Don't Know)" is an excellent closing song. Other fun songs include "Million Pieces," "Live In Stereo," and "Cornelius." The Newsboys bring themselves to a new level, and it is one that they should remain on. If you're a longtime Newsboys fan, I would listen before buying. If you're a newcomer to the world of contemporary Christian music, this is a great place to start.
Free Music Review: Newsboys - Thrive Hit: 5 Stars
"Thrive" (2002) is the ninth album by Christian pop/rock band Newsboys. It is their best album since "Take Me to Your Leader" (1996), to which it is most similar stylistically.
Steve Taylor is back writing lyrics for the Newsboys, and man, does it make a difference. They aren't any less "Christian" than what the Newsboys have written on their own, but they're infinitely more clever. They're downright entertaining to listen for.
The songwriting is what puts this album over the top, though. There's not a bad song on this album. The rhythms and the tunes are catchy, and a lot more memorable than anything the Newsboys have done since "Take Me to Your Leader".
Free Music Review: Newsboys surprise with a great album Hit: 5 Stars
As an employee at a Christian bookstore, I felt oversaturated with Newsboys stuff. I had seen them in concert once and felt like they put on a good show but was unimpressed by their music. Well, when Thrive released, I heard people raving about its greatness. I thought, this is just going to be a typical Newsboys album with goofy song titles and too much of a pop feel for its own good. I listened to the CD and was thoroughly impressed. Whether the album is rocking, on songs such as Rescue, or chilling out, on songs like It is You and Thrive, the music and the lyrics are excellent. I recommend this album as by far the best Christian album of 2002, and I'm not even a Newsboys fan.
Free Music Review: Same Great Newsboys -- Tasty New Flavor Hit: 5 Stars
After listening to every Newsboys album (since Not Ashamed) tons of times I recognize the fact that every Newsboys album has a unique sound and attitude to it. Thrive is no different. For the most part, Thrive is a very upbeat and rockin' album. A little, heavier, but good nevertheless. There isn't one song that I don't enjoy singing along to. To fully appreciate the album you have to have the volume up loud on a good stereo (car stereo works great). Once I listen to is another 10 or 20 times, I could probably write a better review, but if you even remotely like any of the Newsboys previous work, you should definately give a listen to Thrive.
Free Music Review: Welcome Back Steve Taylor! Hit: 5 Stars
The Newsboys are great musicians, and on this album they have reunited with an old friend. Steve Taylor, the christian alternative artist from the 80s, lends his experienced hand in both lyric writing and production. The result? Awesome lyrics perfectly mesh with Peter Furler's music. If you like the Newsboy's Take me to Your Leader album, and some of there other earlier stuff, then run, don't walk to purchase this album. Stop reading this review and BUY IT NOW! This is one of those rare albums where it hooks you after the first listening and only grows on you. Great job guys! What a wonderful way to Praise Jesus Christ.
