Free Music Review: I love the music on this cast recording
Hit: 5 Stars

The music on this cast recording is emotionally powerful, because it addresses the issue of mental illness and depression. This musical proves that mental illness can affect an entire family. My favorite track is "You Don't Know". Alice Ripley is perfectly cast as a woman suffering from depression and bipolar disease. She sings this song with such feeling. "I Am The One" is sung by J. Robert Spencer. This song is about a husband struggling with his wife's illness. J. Robert Spencer also sings the beautiful song entitled "A Light In The Dark". Jennifer Damiano shines on the song "Superboy and Invisible Girl". "Just Another Day" is a great song sung by the cast. This song is upbeat and one of my favorites. Perfect For You is a pretty song performed by Adam Chanler-Berat and Jennifer Damiano. Louis Hopson has a strong voice. He sings the songs "Catch Me I'm Falling" and "Make Up Your Mind" with Alice Ripley with such conviction. I love the music on this cast recording.

Free Music Review: Awesome show!
Hit: 5 Stars

I returned from seeing this musical on Broadway and immediately ordered the CD. Next to Normal is an amazing show! Incredibly powerful! Just spectacular! It is infinitely deserving of the critical accolades that it has been receiving. It is truly one of the greatest musicals ever to have played Broadway -- and I have seen many of the best.

Most of the original cast is no longer in the Broadway production currently running. Real-life husband and wife Jason Danieley and Marie Mazzie -- are spectacularas Dan and Diana. Kyle Dean Massey is amazing as Gabe. Meghan Fahy and Adam Chanler-Berat are wonderful as Natalie and Henry. Louis Hobson is terrific as Dr. Madden/Dr. Fine. They are wonderful.

Sadly, the last Broadway performance will take place on January 16, 2011. If you haven't had the opportunity to see this extraordinary production, run to purchase tickets. You will not be disappointed. And, be sure to bring plenty of kleenex.

Free Music Review: Quite an interesting, modern musical
Hit: 5 Stars

N2N is a totally different musical to the one you might expect. Far from the Rodgers&Hammerstein/Andrew Lloyd Webber kind of beat, this is not a "feel-good" piece; on the contrary, it's closer to "cut-your-veins-after-you-see-it" kind of musical, with songs that cannot be reviewed alone but within the whole context. Closer to a modern opera, it tells the disturbing story of a disfunctional family, centered on the figure of the emotionally troubled mother and her relation with her family and her psychiatrist. It's good that some really good artists come out with something different and interesting for contemporary audiences, in the same path followed by musicals such as CAROLINE, OR CHANGE or SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD. On the contrary, if you loved SHRECK, LEGALLY BLONDE or ROCK OF AGES, think it twice...

Free Music Review: brilliant!
Hit: 5 Stars

I knew nothing about Next to Normal except for the thrilling number presented on the Tonys broadcast. Not having seen the show I didn't want waste money without hearing the score but when I couldn't get any of my friends to buy the album I bit the bullet. I love Alice Ripley (from her amazing performance in "Side Show" and the duet albums with Emily Skinner") but I don't like rock scores. The music is completely appropriate to the contemporary story. The story, characters, situations become richer, deeper and more powerful with each listening. I had no idea that their son had died years before. That makes everything much more poignant. I can't wait for a production to come to San Francisco.
This album is far from depressing, it's exhilarating. Makes one glad to be alive!

Free Music Review: Amazing Cast, Music
Hit: 5 Stars

Saw this musical last month in New York and was completely entertained. While the subject matter seems unusual for a musical, the cast was amazing & the score was a powerful force - and gets better and better with repeat listenings.

Starring Alice Ripley (Side Show, Rocky Horror Show) and J. Robert Spencer (Jersey Boys), the interplay of both delicate ballads and edgy rockers reflects the ever-changing moods of a household dealing with bipolar issues. Aaron Tveit (robbed of a Tony nomination) and Jennifer Damiano are also terrific.
