Free Music Notes for Next to Normal (Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: See the show! Hit: 5 Stars
I saw this show in May, right after the Tony nominations. I have to say, it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. You walk out having felt so many different emotions that you aren't sure how to feel at the end. This is NOT a bad thing. It's not your normal "happy ending", but you still leave the show feeling hope. And that's a wonderful thing.
We all know our families aren't perfect. This show puts that right out there for anyone who has a less than normal family.
If you haven't seen it, GO. Alice Ripley gives a fantastic performance and was totally worthy of the Tony award that she received.
As soon as I got home from my trip to New York, I ordered the soundtrack. And it is just as fantastic as the show.
Free Music Review: Tremendous Hit: 5 Stars
I prefer to see the musical before purchasing the Original Broadway Cast Recording, and that was what I did with Next to Normal particularly since I saw the performance before the CD was released. People should run to see this show as it is that fantastic. The music and lyrics are beautiful and the tempo takes us along through a period of time in a manic depressive woman's life. It is not necessary though to see the Broadway show to enjoy this provocative score...you will understand the descend and struggles of this woman and her family without ever seeing a performance. I received my CD last week from Amazon.com and have already listened to it 8 times. This is an amazing work of art...
Free Music Review: Brilliant Psycho-Musical Hit: 5 Stars
"Next to Normal" is for me the most exciting theater evening since Equus, and this CD captures the sources of the excitement as well as audio possibly can.
The original cast are at top voice, the notes contain every word of the riveting lyrics plus almost every scrap of the scattered dialogue, and many of the rapid-fire references in the original that passed by so speedily become clear here for the first time.
The combination of music and story is soul-shaking. It is as though "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" had been co-written by the composer of "Superstar" or "Hair". A cutting-edge musical available on 2 discs.
Free Music Review: Soundtrack can only partially tell the story Hit: 5 Stars
I was fortunate enough to see the show Next To Normal performed live on Broadway three times and am going back when the show is remounted in my town at end of November. It was amazing for me to witness the powerful vocal delivery of the performers live. You can understand why Alice J. Ripley won the Tony award last year. Every performance that I attended she breezed through with consistent high energy. After the show, during the meet and greet, Ms. Ripley proved herself to be a formidable presence and a staunch character indeed. Highly recommend this show, the CD and the paperback book of the show. (Revised review done on September 8, 2010).
Free Music Review: Beyond Emotions or Words Hit: 5 Stars
I saw this show on a whim in NYC while traveling alone. I fell in love with it immediately, being able to relate a lot to the central story. So clearly, I needed the recording, and it has not disappointed. Seriously, this is my emotional outlet. Bad days, happy days, angry day, this supplements them all perfectly. It has great running music as well as crying music. Thank God it's on my iTunes, or I would have probably worn the CDs out already. I do recommend seeing the show before listening to the CDs, as it can give away some of the "Oh Wow" moments of the show. But nonetheless, see the show, buy the music, and enjoy!
