Free Music Review: WOW! Just . . . WOW!

OK - the first time I listened to this CD, I thought, "Erm, it's alright, but "Woven and Spun" was far better." But I kept listening, and it began to grow on me (the best albums always start off not seeming that great). I've seen several people say this, and I will echo it here - it is Nichole's nearly unmatched writing skills that elevate this album beyond any of her others. In a market that is nearly glutted with Praise and Worship albums, you begin to miss the deeper reflections on a life lived in this world while clinging to the next. This is an album that demands you to investigate and dig deeper - once you learn what each song is about, you begin to appreciate the beauty and reality and depth of them all.
If you buy the Special Edition, you will have a major aide in that Nichole kindly provided COPIOUS notes as to where each song came from (something I honestly wish EVERY artist was REQUIRED to do). After reading alot of these notes, I found myself re-listening to songs I had previously dismissed as "not that good," until I couldn't name a song I liked least!
Now, while on the surface this CD doesn't seem immediately quite as musically satisfying as "Woven and Spun" (a testament to how great THAT album is), the music here is still top notch. But again, it is the fervor and passion within each song that makes the whole album stand out! I have to say "thank you" to Nichole for sharing what is essentially a collection of stories from her world and those who inhabit it. Here is a soundtrack for the most dramatic and ultimately uplifting movie ever made, if someone wants to write and film it.
A few album notes:
"REAL TO ME" is a pretty unique track for Nichole, bordering on Alternative Pop - it shows even more range with her voice, and I like it mixed in with the rest of the album - I'm just not sure I would want her to go completely in this direction.
"CRIMSON and HOLD ON" - the first track returns us briefly to that almost classical sounding Nichole we first heard with "ANYWAY" and provides one of the nicest engineering moments of the disc as it transitions into "HOLD ON" - Nichole's last note subtly blends into a sustained synthetic chord, and it is done so nicely you really can't say where she ends and the chord begins.
"MILES" (Special Edition ONLY) I actually burst into tears listening to this one - as soon as I could tell where the story was going, I went from dry eyed to a river in about .02 seconds.
"WHAT IF" I agree with the poster below that this is one of the greatest Christian songs in a long time, offering a challenge to skeptics out there - "Sure, Jesus may just be another prophet and teacher - but WHAT IF He is more? What if He surprises you with the love He offers?"
On Nichole's website, she describes wondering where to go musically after "Woven and Spun" - well, if she begins to wonder where to go from THIS album, I would like to offer a suggestion:
Nichole - you have GOT to do an all acoustic album! You, a piano, and an empty room - I would pay $100 for that album!! You have the voice, the writing, and the skill to weave a masterpiece of just blissful art! Your best work to me began with "ANYWAY" and "BURNIN'" I want to hear more tracks like that - something near classical.
Just a suggestion!
At any rate, this is a fantastic disc - just be sure to get the Special edition for the notes and a great final piece with "THE ALTAR."
