Nick Carter has come a long way since his 12-year-old days as a member of the Backstreet Boys 10 years ago. (That's not to say he's still not a member though for all you doubters out there.) On his breakthrough solo cd, "Now or Never," Nickolas shows what he's truly made of. He had a lot more hands-on action on this cd (writing 50% of the songs), and it definately shows with his vocal talent, lyric growth and maturity, and emotions. "Help Me," the single out on TRL and radio right now, is just a snipplet of all the songs you'll get on this album if you buy it. It has a hint of rock, but you can still feel the pop in it. It's the type of song everybody can relate to, even though they might not admit it, they all need help with discovery who they are. "My Confession" is an infectuous song that describes wanting something that might be hard to get or have a barrier put up in front of it. "I Stand For You" is the first rock-type song you'll hear on this cd. Nick wrote this song about his new-found freedom and getting away with somebody he loves. My favorite song is the next single, "Do I Have to Cry For You," also written by Nick. At first instant, this song might sound reminiscent of Bryan Adams' "Everything I Do I Do It For You." But once Nick's voice comes into play your opinion changes, and you know all his emotions are put into it. How do you know this? The instant watery eyes that this tear-jerker causes. It's not a sad song, but you feel all the emotions in his voice and you feel what he feels. "Girls in the USA" is also reminiscent of another artist, this one a rock one. His name is Bon Jovi. This song is just a fun song about Nick describing all the girls in each state of the land of freedom and why he loves each one of them. Listen closely--you might hear why Nick loves you! Number six, "I Got You," is another ballad and Nick's vocal talents from all the years of being in the Backstreet Boys are seen again. "Is it Saturday Yet" is just a fun song you want to sing along too. It's not really rock, and it's not really pop--just fun. Although some of the lyrics are a bit corny, "I was raised by the television/Jerry Springer was my dad/and it wouldn't matter if/Martha Sterwart was my mom/and Aaron Carter was my brother/I'd still be bad..." when he gets to that chorus you'll be wishing it was Saturday for you too so you can have some fun also. "Blow Your Mind" is a bit different than anything else. It has a little bit of techno mixed with pop and urges you to sing along. He tells a story about how easy it was for him to fall for a girl, when all she wanted was his money. Some fans might relate this to a certain ex-girlfriend, but this reviewer won't go there becuase she likes to sing along to the song and doesn't want anybody getting mad at her. Ah, the risque "Miss America." When Nick Carter, of all people, says "take it off, take off, let's get it on, get it on," I just don't know what to do...Another risque (if you read into it) song is "I Just Wanna Take You Home." Nick expresses the feelings of going on a date, when all you want to do is, well, what the title says! "Heart Without a Home" is the other one of my favorites. It's a beautiful ballad with beautiful vocals and shows Nick's emotions--he wants to love a girl even though she may feel like an outcast or something, she's special to him ("you're the bluebird in my sky, i only wanna makeyou happy cuz i love to see you fly."). Finally, "Who Needs the World" ends this cd magnificently as a typical love ballad, but there's just something about Nick's voice that adds a special touch to it.All in all, I would recommend this cd to anybody! There are a lot of skeptical people doubting Nick, but he's come a long way since his "jam on cuz Backstreet's got it" bubble-gum pop days. As a Backstreet Boys fan originally, I can honestly say I love the change in him and he matured as well as his fans, like me. And those non-pop fans, I'm sure there'll be one song on here that you like something about. Trust me, it's not corny, it's beautiful.
