Free Music Notes for Century ChildFree Music Review: Wow Hit: 5 Stars
I don't know how to start. But, wow!! This is a great and beautifully done album. The only songs i don't like are "dead to the world", the first half of "slaying the dreamer" and "feel for you". The rest are SO GOOD!! Here is what i think
1. Bless the Child- Starts off a little slow then gets very heavy. An excellent opener and an excellent song. 10/10
2. End of all Hope- A heavy and great song. 9.5/10
3. Dead to the World- One of the very few songs i don't like. No comment. 3/10
4. Ever Dream- I do't know how to describe this song, but i like it a lot. Another great song. 9/10
5. Slaying the Dreamer- I don't like the first half but i love the second half. Marco's voice is very deathly and SO GOOD. 7.5/10
6. Forver Yours- A very slow and soft song, but beautiful. I like it. 8/10
7. Ocean Soul- Starts off with beautiful chaunting then Tarja starts singing and it gets pretty heavy, but not too heavy. A very good song. 8.5/10
8. Feel for You- Don't like it. 4/10
9. Phantom of the Opera- I heard this is a cover song. But anyway i really like this song. It's heavy. Marco's voice is deathly as usual :). 9/10
10. Beauty of the Beast- I love this song. It's heavy. This is a long but excellent song. Usually when bands do long songs it's boring, but not this one! They put 3 songs togther so it doesn't get boring. Great thing to do. 10/10
Overall, this is an excellent album. Tarja's vocals are very operatic but damn...it's beautiful. I've heard lots of people complainging about Marco's voice. I like his voice! He's a wonderful singer. And the other musicians are very talented and know what they're doing. If you like gothic metal, get this! Its' a must have
Free Music Review: Nightwish's Masterpiece Hit: 5 Stars
I own all of Nightwish's albums and singles, and Century Child is the best of the bunch. As you can see from some of the other reviews here, Nightwish isn't for everyone. Angry teenagers looking for a thrash metal band should look elsewhere. Nightwish are as heavy as most metal bands, but they mix in a symphonic sound. I like to say they are loosely a cross between Iron Maiden (for the fantasy themes and similarities between the male vocalist and Maiden's vocalist) and Enya (for the fantasy themes and symphonic sound), but that's not entirely accurate; Nightwish have a sound all their own that cannot be easily compared to anything else.Nightwish's other albums, including Wishmaster, Oceanborn, Angels Fall First, and the new Once, are heavier than Century Child. Century Child is somewhat a concept album, mixing in more symphony, creating a "beautiful" metal sound. "Century Child" is by far the best CD in my collection, and Nightwish is the only metal band I really like. Metallica and Megadeth were cool when I was 14, but got old quickly. I always thought talented musicians could do more with the metal genre than has been done in the past, and I'm glad to find that there is a metal band which makes consistently great music. That band is Nightwish. If you like metal, you may want to skip Century Child for now and pick up their other albums, saving the best for last. Century Child does have heavy songs (in fact, most of them are heavy) but the mixing takes away from that a little, while the others are no-holds-barred heavy. If you just like a beautiful sound and you're looking for something a little more than what most albums in your genre of choice have to offer, Century Child is a great album. You won't regret listening to this album.
Free Music Review: "Losing emotion. Finding devotion." Hit: 5 Stars
Six months ago music like this was completely unknown to me. For fifty years my listening enjoyment was based on that offered by American radio - rock, pop, jazz, classical, country. During most of the past half century, it provided the emotional experiences wanted from music. But during the last few years, the emotion was slipping away, so much so that I considered turning it all off, which was not a happy thought. Then someone (one more time - thanks Jeff) gave me this CD. Unless you have experienced something similar to my 50 year musical history, you cannot imagine the shock of hearing something so powerful, so different, so beautiful for the first time. All of the reviews I have done here (except The Irish Volunteer), and all that I will do, are a result of listening to this one amazing work of art, which opened the doors to an amazing new world of listening pleasure.
Being the first "new" music experienced may have something to do with it being in my top five list, but there is no doubt the music itself deserves the rating. Of all the other similar groups, only Tarja seems to have the true operatic sound. Every selection is excellent in all ways, making it difficult to pick a favorite; however my ear deems Dead to the World as having a slight edge over the others. Marco, who has a very appealing voice, provides a perfect contrast to Tarja in this song. He adds a whole new, and positive, dimension to a group that already had more dimensions than most. In fact, their version of Phantom of the Opera on this CD is by far the best I've heard, which leaves me wishing they would get back together to record the whole sound track. (Please see my profile for a brief discussion of my rating philosophy.)
Free Music Review: Not just a Metal band but the best band I have ever heard Hit: 5 Stars
I have Angels Fall First, Oceahborn, Wishmaster, Over the Hills and Far Away, and Century Child. That's right all five CD's I hope to have there new album to. But know on to Nightwish, this CD and the rest of there CD's. Some people compere them to bands like Tristania, TOT, After Forever and so on. They do this because I believe because like the other bands Nightwish has a female lead singer. But if you really listen to those bands then listen to Nightwish well they are nothing alike. In those bands they have not only a female singer but also two or three male lead singers. Those other bands also use death metal in there sound. Nightwish seems to use more power, speed, and know with Marco Hietala more Metallica, etc sounds. The ohter reason I believe this is some people may have started with Oceanborn, Wishmaster, and Century Child. I'm going to say right know you don't know there sound then. Go out and find and buy Angels Fall First. Then listen to there CD's from AFF, OB, WM, and CC. Also if you can find it OTHAFA. Century Child is a great heavy album by Nightwish. Marco Hietala and Tarja Turunen are the best singers I have ever heard. Emppu is great on Guitars. I love Jukka on the drums. Then there is Tuomas what can I say about him? He is the best song writer out there. I like Tristania and I think Morten Veland is a good writer. But I feel Tuomas puts him to shame. It's said best in there song Dead To The World: "I studied the silence to learn the music." Tuomas can writer things so that when Tarja sings you can really feel. Tarja be it she use her voice on Oceanborn, or here she is great. She can really change it up.
Free Music Review: Band geek likes this!!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Hey they are awsome. Sounds like Evanescence stole some ideas from them... But WOW! They're from Finland and so is HIM but Nightwish is much better. There are strings and percussion and woodwinds galore in this album. If your a band geek i would recomend this album if you want to get back to some "real" music.
"Bless the child"
is good it gave my friends the chills ;-).
"End of Hope"
is definately one of my favorties
"Dead to the World"
awsome keyboard parts and i hear a hint of keyboard percussion like xylophone maybe....
"Ever Dream"
slow song perfect for a loved one...
"Slaying the Dreamer"
Heavy one of my favorites :-D
"Forever yours"
Beautiful vocals at first and a nice pan flute in the second half of the song .. very much a ballad ( in Band Geek opinion)
"Ocean Soul"
i'm still trying to figure out what Ocean soul is... good song semi heavy good.
"Feel for you"
i like this one... awsome string parts. I love Tarja's voice!!!!!
"Phantom of the Opera"
Tarja could give Sarah Brightman a run for her money, though she doesn't hit the high C in the last quarter of the song but hey it's metal. Their rendition made my jaw drop and i had to wipe drool off my chin when i first heard it.
"Beauty of the Beast"
I definately hear some Keyboard percussion... This is how i spend my time inbetween World History and College Pre-Calc and then Programming.
Hope this helps and i don't offend any one.
