Free Music Notes for OceanbornFree Music Review: Nightwish buy their first pair of rock boots Hit: 3 StarsThis album comes out of the blocks with two absolutely charming and brilliant songs. Stargazers and Gethsemane were on heavy rotation at my place in the months after I bought this album I can tell you. Really, if your uninitiated in the ways of Nightwish I'd have to recommend you download MP3's of those two songs as they are very much intelligent songs both musically and lyrically and truly show the depth of thinking in this bands creative engine room.
As the album unfolds we get other songs that while not in the same league are also interesting in setting out the bands stall such as The Pharaoh Sails to Orion and the single Sleeping Sun. The whole thing is nicely produced and all the players slot into their places and get their respective jobs done. The booklet includes all the lyrics and the cover artwork also gives you a good idea of what the band is all about.
All up I'd wholeheartedly recommend this album to anyone who heard Once and wants to explore the back catalogue, just don't expect the same kill factor here as on this album the band were only progressing to the orchestral metal monster they'd later become. And admittedly nowadays it virtually never graces my stereo given that when I want to listen to this band, this ain't the album I reach for. It is a touch twee, naive and Tarja is singing so high this disc will always be a bit of an acquired taste. But as one of the fore runners and front runners of the genre Nightwish had something goin' one almost from the word go.
Free Music Review: Breathtaking! Hit: 5 StarsWhen I got this for X-Mas, I knew it was going to be good. After listening, while reading the lyrics, I was blown away. I don't have a favorite Nightwish album, because they're all practically perfect, but this was a big jump from "Angels Fall First."
This album, definitely Tarja's, really explored her range and potential as the singer. Some of the songs ( Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean, Pharaoh Sails to Orion) seemed to tie together to me, but its just a thought. This is a great start for new fans, but this must be in your library if you like Epica, Within Temptation and Kamelot. This is an oceanborn masterpiece!
Free Music Review: Nightwish Hit: 4 StarsNightwish are an awesome band, Tuomas is a genius! This one has grown on me. Tarja's vocals seemed to calm down over later cd's. Symphonic/Landscape metal at it's best. Finland does this music the best.
Free Music Review: 80s and Opera Hit: 2 StarsThis cd popped up in my recommendations, and I guess I've rated too many 80s cds. Even if all you had were the 30-second previews, it would immediately be apparent the music is simplistic in construction: a steady beat mainly in 4/4 with little variation therein. Nothing unique.
What is supposedly unique with Nightwish is the opera singer with a Symphonic Metal band. But this is no "Queen of the Winter Night" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra; this is a forced-vibrato female who sounds like she's sitting on a vibrating chair. Horrid, horrid. This is no "Phantom" and this isn't opera; it's badly executed shtick constructed to lure in Gothic teenagers.
Free Music Review: Awesome!!! Hit: 5 StarsNightwish!!! A very powerful band! This album is AMAZING! It is heavy, and with awesome fills! This Album is a must have !!!
