Free Music Review: a beautiful mixture
Hit: 4 Stars

This CD IS really awesome. The metal parts blend perfectly with the operaitc style of vocals. This is the perfect CD to pop in after a stress full day or in my case night of work. I plan to buy all the other nightwish releases in the future. I would even see them in concert and for me that is saying a lot because I do not like crowds. Buy this it will help u relax.

Free Music Review: Spellbinding. Tarja is a goddess
Hit: 5 Stars

When i first heard "i wish i had an angel" by nightwish i was fascinated. The mixture of heavy metal and operatic female singing was uniquely satisfying.

This album is just gorgeous. The instruments are all well played, particularly the guitar work. There are even a few guitar solos from time to time, which are quite satisfying- and unlike older guitar solos from (with all do respect) metallica, for example, they carry on the cool, feminine feeling the entire album sails on. The music is, well, night-oriented. Nightwish is perhaps something that metal fans and goth fans can agree upon as excellent.

Without a doubt, though, Tarja's vocals are transcendent. Her finnish accent only adds to the fantasy-feeling. Its like being in another world, song after song. And after hearing the wonderful "walking in the air", you get hit by the secret track. It is hauntingly mesmerizing. An end to the wonderful, wonderful proof that yes, metal lives.

Free Music Review: Goth metal, Symphonic Metal, Old School Metal Mixed With Opera, whatever.
Hit: 4 Stars

This is the first Nightwish album I have bought. I picked up the singles for "Wish I Had An Angel" and "Nemo" from iTunes, and was pretty well hooked. I know this album will grow on me, but it doesn't grab me all that strongly, hence the 1 star penalty.

So why? I can offer this anecdote by way of explanation. When I saw Yes in concert last, they eschewed their popular, well-known numbers for a lot of back-catalog lengthy solo prog rock. Personally, I couldn't care less for their "bluer" music; I like the songs I can sing along with. I left that concert early. (I also don't care for fully half of Led Zeppelin's music for the same reason, so you can see my sophistication here.)
How does this relate? Well, Tarja's voice is certainly an excellent addition to Metal, but it still seems like it's looking for a place. She could always sing with a rock style, but that would destroy the originality.
In my opinion, Nightwish is better when they are able to more seamlessly meld opera and metal, as in "Wish I Had An Angel," and contrasted to "Passion And The Opera" (what a bizarre mish-mash that last one is). I think they best blend when Marco(?) sings duets with Tarja.

Maybe I just prefer their later stuff. I certainly plan on picking up the latest disc for a second try.

Bottom line, if you like Trans-Siberian Orchestra, but wish they did something other than Christmas music (aside from Beethoven's), then Nightwish is the next best thing.

Free Music Review: My second favorite Nightwish CD
Hit: 5 Stars

I admit I'm a recent convert to the so-called "Goth Metal" sound, but Nightwish are the very best. This album was my first foray into Nightwish, and though I now own ALL of their US-released albums (but not all imports or DVDs, yet), this easily rates as one of their best.

You definitely won't go wrong with this one, but the Nightwish album Once is their best so far. I'd say buy both so you won't miss out.

Others have commented on The Gathering and Lacuna Coil. I own their albums, and they are both very much worth listening to, but Nightwish are the best in this "genre".

Free Music Review: Eh...
Hit: 4 Stars

This is the third Nightwish album I bought (the first one was 'Once' and the second one 'Wishmaster'), and this album is okay. It's definitely good in comparison to their next album, Wishmaster. The line-up in Nightwish had been, at the time, Tarja Turunen (vocals), Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards, piano, and synthesizers), Emppu Vuorinen (guitars), Jukka Nevalainen (drums), and bassist Sami Vaska (who was replaced in 2002 by Marco Hietala).

On this album there are not many male vocals at all, which is good, because although I think that Tapio Wilska is okay for the two songs he sang in, I don't think I'd be able to tolerate his voice being used more often.

1. Stargazers-It's a very energetic song, talking about the stars, the moon, and the galaxy. Tarja does a very good job in the chorus.

2. Gethsemane-I think this is the weakest song on the album. It's a song about Jesus and his time spent in the Garden of Gethsemane. There's just something about this song that doesn't hold my attention like other songs on this album do.

3. Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean-This is the first song with Wilska's vocals. I actually really like this song, it's very energetic. The lyrics were also excellent. The only thing that makes me cringe is that part where Tarja is singing 'Leave me be, leave me be, leave me...bee.eeeee', that just sounds rather strange.

4. Sacrament of Wilderness-This is probably one of my favourite songs on the album. There is an awesome opener. I love the continuing theme of snow angels in this.

5. Passion and the Opera- It takes a while to really be able to appreciate this song, but it's good. Awesome cellos.

6. Swanheart-This is the first ballad. The lyrics are really nice, and soft. I think Nightwish has made better ballads but the song is still wonderful.

7. Moondance- This is an instrumental, for the most part. It's very bouncy, and it sounds like it has Russian (musical) influences.

8. The Riddler-I actually like this song quite a bit, it poses some very interesting questions. It's very fast-paced, even though it's very long.

9. The Pharaoh Sails To Orion-This is another song featuring Wilska's voice. I like this song a lot better than the other song he's in. The lyrics are really fascinating, especially if you're into Ancient Egypt.

10. Walking In The Air- This is a cover of the theme from 'The Snowman'. The song really does make you want to walk in the air. It's a soft song.

11. Sleeping Sun-This was written for the solar eclipse that was occurring in Germany. Even if you weren't there to see the eclipse, or if you didn't even know that there was an eclipse, you can still appreciate this song. It's slow, but it holds your attention. It's a great closing song.

All in all, I would reccomend getting this album, there are more good songs than bad, but I would suggest getting one of their other albums first, because if you buy this album first you might not form a very good impression of Nightwish.
