Free Music Notes for In Their Darkened ShrinesFree Music Review: slightly confused Hit: 2 StarsI really wanted to like this band, really. I am a big fan of a wide variety of heavy music, from latter day fare like Sabbath and Maiden to more modern outings like Opeth,Mastodon,LOG,Death,Sepultura, the list goes on. I appreciate many of the different genres of heavy music that are available, and I can remember at one time I wouldnt even listen to anything that even remotely resembled a "death growl". Obviously my tastes have changed, but I still think that I agree with a previous reviewer who stated that it should at least be coherent,to some degree. I just cant get past the fact that this just sounds incredibly jumbled,a mish mosh of different sounds and those vocals sound as if they are emanating from bowels. I apologize to fans of this and other bands like Meshuggah and so forth who seem to rely on ultra fast noise and something called polyrhythyms. I actually went and fished out some of my old thrash albums and some of the doom metal Ive acquired and then went back to this to see if my opinion had changed. Sadly,it did not. Sometimes theres heavy, like Strapping Young Lad that pushes the boundaries of metal but still retains some sonic fury and sense of core rythym without crushing under the weight of its own excesses, and then theres this stuff that is just too fast and heavy for its own good. Then again,Ive never been a real Cannibal Corpse fan or a Dillinger Escape Plan fan or even a Meshuggah fan. I guess this stuffs just not for everyone.

Free Music Review: Music from another galaxy. Hit: 5 Stars The first time I heard this Cd I was left with my mouth hanging open in disbelief of what I had just heard. If there are any fellow 'old guys' of Death Metal reading this like me and remember what their faces looked like when the godfather's like Deicide, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse and Death emerged on the scene to slay minds forevermore, you will have a much more amazed look on your face when first hearing Nile. Musical skills alone make these guys unable to be really copied, I think. Cryptopsy are probably the only other band I can think of where you know there can be no copies. It's just impossible when you're dealing with bands that can play this amazing. There's no need to go into a song by song analogy, no need to talk about sound or anything else for that matter. If you like Death Metal you will love Nile: that simple. There will never be another like them. Easy 5 stars.
Free Music Review: Some of the best Tech-Death that I've ever heard. Hit: 5 StarsThis album can be held up with the likes of the best Death Metal albums of all time. Bands like Cryptopsy and Gorguts are humbled by the death grunts and unrelenting, face melting guitar riffs that are worth owning this album for alone (namely those in the first track). Believe me, it will exceed any expectation that you could possibly have.
The solo's begin within the first two minutes of the opening track and don't let up until the album is over. The use of the drums are perfect, not overbearing and not too weak and the production values are astonishing.
This is true Metal. One of the few Death albums that is actually worth owning.
Free Music Review: Further proof death metal has tons of value Hit: 5 StarsI must respectfully disagree with fellow reviewer Shotgun Method (no hard feelings though, I enjoy his reviews). Nile is one of those death metal bands that sound totally different. These days third rate metalcore bands are all around, such as Animosity, Job For A Cowboy, etc. Sure, Nile won't have mainstream success and get alot of MTV play, but be damned, Nile frankly deserve this.
What I love about this album is their music, and the way it tells the story and gives the imagery about what the song is about. Someone might merely talk about how their music is simply a show, merely showing their technical abilities. I will give props to Janitor X for actually giving them credit for their musical skills, but I notice that some people may not understand their music. Songs like I Whisper IN the Ear Of The Dead off thsi album may not keep you pumped, but instead, take you into the subject content of the song, as the interlude of the song. Wind Of Horus swirls like the wind of horus. Unas, Slayer Of The Gods is another highlight, an eleven minute song with chants and some interludes thrown in. And another would be Sarcophagus, I partically like that song, with a doom metal tempo about a mummy's spirit getting disturbed. Reading the liner notes as well will further immerse you in their music, understanding their music won't get anywhere if you are looking for a typical cathcy song you'll like on a first listen. And they also thrown in an epic, a first.
Many people will have their own opinions about this album, but mine is that they are a great death metal band. I am not too big of a death metal fan, but I am not one of those classic rock snobs unlike some people you might know or read reviews about. Their music is original, and unique. There will never be another band like them in death metal.
Still not convinced Slipknot has more talent (Spike is a moron)?
