Free Music Notes for Slip (W/Dvd) (Dig)Free Music Review: Thank You for Thanking Us! Hit: 4 Stars
When Discipline first popped up, it was a great shock and the song was amazing. The only strange thing is, well, it seemed like somewhat of a demo. The way he begins singing too early then stops and then the way the songs cuts out early. Hey, who am I to complain? After the insult that was Ghosts I-IV, I was very grateful.
Then he follows it up with a complete FREE album! Suddenly, I am no longer angry about the meager $5 I spent on Ghosts (not a bad price for 2 CD's, so I really had no right to complain EVER). At first, it was a rush- everyone trying to download at once. I don't remember if, at the time, we knew it was going to remain available forever. Whatever the case, I couldn't get it fast enough.
I did not listen to a single track until I had them all and in order. I found a nice beach to sit and listen and I was blown away! I loved Year Zero, and With Teeth was 75% awesome, but the Slip was/is brilliant. Even the instrumental stuff worked perfectly(he just released 36 instrumental songs, why any more?). More than that, my fear that this would just be a collection of odds and ends from the last few albums (like the missing Not So Pretty Now, Non-Entity, the Life You Didn't Lead, and Message to No One in Particular), some just re-named, was thankfully unfounded. This was an album of songs that fit together perfectly.
Now on to the whole point of my "review". As a collector, I needed the Slip in physical form. Sure, in the back of my mind I was hoping the rumours of an entire new disc or a few bonus tracks were true, but aside from the live in the studio stuff, I found nothing new (I'm sure there is some "secret code or trick" someone will find soon, but until then, I feel I am allowed to complain about the one SINGLE problem with the CD version of the Slip; Discipline has not been fixed! Maybe the early start on the vocals was intentional, after all, it sounds cool, but THE END!!! They did not fix the end. It just cuts off! That drives me crazy. Everything else about this CD is perfect- the mysterious artwork, the stickers (is there 1 for every song?), lyrics, the bonus disc. It's all great save that ONE nails-on-a-chalkboard aggrivation. And why Discipline out of all the songs? Why not Letting You (not that I dislike Letting You, but if I HAD to pick a "least favorite", then...)
Still, these years have taught me, NIN has GREAT re-sale value, so buy as many copies as you can because A LOT of people are going to be sitting back saying "why bother? I can get it for free.", but a few years from now, like all the other NIN stuff, people will be searching high and low. And even though I did end up buying my copy, I still want to say "THANK YOU" to Trent Reznor for doing something this amazing just to thank his fans.
Free Music Review: A good end to a great stretch Hit: 4 Stars
As the last album in a striking creative streak, it's inevitably for the Slip to get some flak. The albums preceding it were much longer and relied more upon lyrical narrative and complex musical structure. Year Zero told a story much like the Downward Spiral Had, With Teeth attempted to be usual NIN fare, while Ghosts was in a league of its own. All in all, With Teeth, Year Zero, and Ghosts represented almost FIVE hours of music total, all released in the span of a couple years. So, it's no wonder that the Slip may seem paltry in comparison- it's stripped-down garage rock sound certainly doesn't help either.
However, after multiple listens, the Slip has started to sound superior to Year Zero and With Teeth for me (Ghosts isn't even worth comparing, it's an entirely different animal), and is even becoming one of my favorite NIN albums. Reznor tries new things in the Slip, and at the same time it harkens back to Broken-era NIN, if only for its lack of restraint. From the opening tracks thru Lights in the Sky, the album is almost entirely straight-up rock and roll dissonance. The first track "999,999" serves as a tense lead up to
"1,000,000" which charges forwards with aggressive, fast-paced electronics accompanied by live drums (either that or live-sounding drum samples). Reznor's voice even sounds upbeat in an Iggy Pop sort of way, which contrasts nicely with his usual red-hot lyrical angst. These "rock" tracks may not have the complexity or depth NIN has displayed in the past, but it's undeniable that they are well-written, catchy, and energetic. The album's second phase starts with "Lights in the Sky," one of the most beautiful piano pieces the man has ever written. "Corona Radiata" and "The Four of us are Dying" are both adventurous ambient pieces that lack the emotional heaviness that previous NIN instrumentals have been caked in. They fit well with the rest of the album despite their stylistic differences, largely because they sound more exotic than moody. Finally, the album caps off with one final rocker, "Demon Seed."
The Slip is uniquely digestible for a NIN album, and probably deserves praise based on that alone. Along with its fun, NIN-lite style, it also lacks the excesses and hiccups detectable on Year Zero and With Teeth. Overall, it is remarkably good for a free album, much like Radiohead's "In Rainbows." More importantly, it's an album that lives up to NIN's long and varied creative legacy.
Free Music Review: You Know Once I Start I Cannot Help Myself! Hit: 4 Stars
This album is really cool, I just wish it was a bit longer, and without so many instrumentals, but honestly I think this album would've been superior to both With Teeth and Year Zero if it was the average NIN length album. The intro 999,999 is a really cool sounding intro, typical of NIN albums. 1,000,000 is a very drum-centered song, and the chorus is just incredibly melodic. Getting Away is an anti George Bush song, I believe, with the chorus, "And we are letting you get away, and we are letting you get away, with it", I just get a complete feeling that he is talking about "Dubbya", very cool industrial beat to this one. Discipline is a song which I completely relate to as a person who has been addicted to drugs or alcohol, it is about trying hard to stay clean, but knowing the possibility of relapse, and how you will act once you relapse. This song is very radio-friendly, but do not let that ruin the fact that it is an awesome song, kind of sounds like Fragile-era NIN, which I absolutely loved. Echoplex is also another Fragile-era NIN sounding song, I absolutely love this song, definitely one of my favorites from this album, the lyrics are incredible. Head Down is a very noisy/industrial beat with an undeniably melodic chorus, the beat to this song is really fu**ing cool, I love it. Lights In The Sky is a very, very slow song, with only Trents voice and a piano, not really my favorite song at all, but many people may love it. Corona Radiata and The Four Of Us Are Dying are both instrumentals and very cool ones at that, they are very hallucinagenic and if you like hallucinogens, these would be cool tracks to throw on while experiencing that. Demon Seed is the final track on the album and has a really cool beat, the music sounds like Downward Spiral-era NIN, really cool closer! The vocals are kind of in the background to the beat in about half of this song, this track may take a few listens, but it is awesome. Overall, this is a really solid NIN release, and I do not think it will disappoint hardcore NIN fans at all, and even newcomers to NIN will probably really like this one. Pick it up or download it for free at NIN's website, and support this cool band, and really cool dude Trent Reznor! Trent is one of the most influential and original artists of all time, he is the reason that other forms of rock started infusing industrial elements into their music!
Free Music Review: Great album that may be misunderstood Hit: 4 Stars
I'll start off by saying I'm a huge fan of Nine Inch Nails and I've enjoyed every one of their studio releases. I think that's why it was so hard for me to accept this album when it was released a few years back. I was expecting something along the lines of what I'd usually get from Nine Inch Nails. An album that sounds nothing like the previous yet still manages to hold the same power and lasting appeal. I think that's where this album falls short as it sounds like a lot of previous Nine Inch Nails jumbled together into one CD. Also, I don't find myself coming back to it as often as I do Broken, With Teeth, (Still), Ghosts, The Downward Spiral...etc.
Giving this album a star rating is hard because there's so many ways it can be reviewed. One way would be to compare it to every other Nine Inch Nails release in which case I'd have to give it 2 stars. I could also rate the album on quality of music compared to everything else that was released by other bands and artists during that 5 year time frame in which case I'd have to give the album 5 stars. I'm going to go ahead and go somewhere inbetween and give it a 4.
It's great music it's just not what the fans have come to expect. If you're not familiar with Nine Inch Nails this would be a great introduction to some of their older material. If you are a long time fan you may not care for this album as much due to high expectations. Either way I think everyone should give the album a shot considering it can be downloaded for free on the official website. Go to the website, download the album, give it a listen. If you love it come back and order the CD/DVD combo pack (Which comes with great live studio performances of 5 of the tracks, which add a lot of power to the songs). If you hate it you can forget about it without feeling like you've been cheated.
Free Music Review: Not Bad.....but certainly not the greatest Hit: 4 Stars
Year Zero 2007
The Slip 2008
The slip is another breath of fresh air after the album year zero. The follow up album to the 2007 realese and it is overall a really good and fun cd but it is not there best.At least they are trying though. 43 years old and Trent still manages to have fun while other bands ( like Metallica ) just do somehting bcause they have to. I have all there albums except for YEAR ZERO REMIX ALBUM and i saw them live 2 tmes. once in 2001 and the other in 2005, right after with teeth came out.
The cd starts off with a slow pace keyboard trach but dont let that fool you. the next 4 tracks are full of fun.
999,999- i Rate a 2. even though it is the start of the cd and is there to take you on the voyage so to say....i find it boring.
1,000,000 I rate a 5. Very good drum beat and perfect mix of the keyboards and guitars.
Letting You- I rate a 3. I like this song but somehting is off here. the vocals just dont sound like they are int he right place at the right time.
Discipline I rate a 5. This song is awesome. at first sounds like the hand that feeds but it gets better. The hand that feeds is only a baby step to this monster. I been playing this song in my car ever since i got this album and it is very good. thanks Trent.
Echoplex I rate a 3. Weird.....but good.
Lights in the sky I rate a 4. Nice and peacefull.....from NIN? usually they are hard as ...well..nails...this is something to put ont he background while you talk to your friends.
Corana radiata I rate a 4. Peacefull, quiet...something that belongs n GHOSTS.
Four of Us Are Dying I rate a 2.
Demon Seed. I rate a 2
