Free Music Review: A Wonderful Companion To The Greatest Album Ever
Hit: 5 Stars

A remix EP of "The Fragile"? I knew it would be great, as all things NIN are, but I didn't think it would be this amazing. Nine Inch Nails have the greatest remixes of any band, and "Things Falling Apart" might be their best remixes yet. Trent Reznor and Alan Moulder's "Slipping Away," a remix of "Into The Void," kicks off the EP with one of the funkiest songs NIN has to offer. It's much different than the original, but at the same time, it still has the same feel and a great beat. "The Great Collapse" was a track that never made it onto "The Fragile." You can see why, too, the song is a bit repetitive, fairly simplistic, and would have been the weakest song off the album had it been included. That's not to say it's bad though, it's far from it, and I still like it very much. Keith Hillebrandt's remix of "The Wretched (Version)" obtains some of the original in it. Trent is singing, there's a similar thumping beat, and the hissing synth is still there. The first remix of "Star Inc." is by Adrian Sherwood. I like to call it the "Star Inc. (Chemical Brothers To The Extreme Version)." The song is nothing like the original. A few people have criticized the song, but I think it's a great remix. I can see why they don't like it though, the song is very chaotic (in an overdone computer bleeps way) and almost to a fault. Benelli's remix of "The Frail (Version)" is the best remix on the EP. Nothing from the original remains except for the piano melody. Instead of the piano though, the melody is on a violin and cello. With the samples which sound like someone deliberately pushed all the buttons and twisted all the knobs just to make their equipment go haywire swarming around the violin and cello, the end result is absolutely breathtaking; it beats out the original. I don't know anything about this Benelli person(s), but this was an amazing remix. Dave Ogilvie's remix of "Star Inc. (Version)," the second remix of the song, isn't like anything I expected it to be--especially coming from Mr. Skinny Puppy himself. The best possible way to describe the song is saying NIN played the song at a rave. It's great though, and is better than the first mix of the song. Danny Lohner's remix of "Where Is Everybody (Version)" kind of sounds like Trent is stuck in his computer, if that makes any sense. There's a more heavenly feel in the background, which is very soothing. It manages to beat out the original version of the song as well. Lohner did an amazing job. NIN's cover of Gary Numan's synth-pop oldie-but-goodie "Metal" is just beautiful. The mechanical buzz, haunting synthetic strings, and whispers are chilling. "Metal" is worth the price of admission alone; definitely the highlight of the album. It can be argued that Keith Hillebrandt's remix of "10 Miles High (Version)" isn't necessary. It isn't all that different than the original version. It's a great song though, and a personal favorite; it's very addictive. Charlie Clouser's remix of "Star Inc. (Version)," the last remix of the song, is dub-meets-drum-n-bass. The intro may be a little long--it's two minutes before the song really kicks in--but I think it's the best version of the song. I felt that three remixes of "Star Inc." was a bit much. I would have like to have seen remixes for different songs; could you imagine Dave Ogilvie doing a remix of "Pilgrimage," or Charlie Clouser doing a remix for "The Great Below"? Nevertheless, all the songs here are wonderful and the mixers all did a great job. I feel that "Things Falling Apart" earns its place as one of the top ten albums of the year, and whether you're a hard-core NINny (like myself), or a casual NIN fan, this is more than worth looking into. Just don't expect "Things Falling Apart" to have the futuristic Art-Rock feel of "The Fragile," as this EP has more of a fluid Electronica feel to it. As said before earlier, "Things Falling Apart" is more than worth picking up, so I urge you to go do so right away.
