Free Music Review: The Devil's In The Details

Unfortunately the details are absent on this album. The Devil has left the Reznor. The electronic beats/drums and synthesized/industrial sounds that made the music cold and mechanical in Pretty Hate Machine, Downward Spiral, and Broken, have been replaced with real drum and base lines and a more live sound. All the lush textures, atmospheres, and twisting soundscapes of The Fragile, which turned NIN into art, have been stripped away. Whereas in The Fragile, we were made to feel as if we were falling from grace, in this album we can only grind our teeth as we recall the moment. If Ghosts and With Teeth had been woven together, we would have had a sequel to rival The Fragile. Instead, we are left with albums that desperately lack the components that made Nine Inch Nails great. All that's left here is aggressive rock with a catchy tune. That isn't to say With Teeth is bad. If you only listened to Nine Inch Nails before because it had a good beat and a lot of angst, you'll find that here also in agreeable and digestible doses--but nothing more.

Trent Reznor has always been a one-trick-pony, but it's a damn good trick: sunny melodies filtered through ferocious electronics. Unfortunately, the trick's impact was often watered down by a tendency toward petulance and self-absorption. Still, almost six years after NIN's last release, The Fragile, the trick itself has lost none of its Teen-Beat-from-hell appeal. With Teeth blisters from the start with "All the Love in the World," and tracks like "The Collector" take full advantage of Dave Grohl's sledgehammer drumming. Reznor stretches occasionally, trying out different tactics, from crunchy, overtly commercial rave-ups ("The Hand That Feeds") to borderline New Wave ("Only"). But Teeth isn't about stretching. It's about doing the same trick, only better, with less clutter and more bite. By neatly distilling the sparseness of Pretty Hate Machine with Downward Sprial-style density, it ends up being the most focused record in the NIN catalog. -Matthew CookeAlternative Rock Music CDs
