Free Music Review: If Only They Had Captured This Amazing Show on DVD As Well..

There are some musicals which send the audience home humming every single number. There are some that contain scores which are instantly forgetable, then there are some, like NINE, which have good scores, but the shows virtues are best appreciated in a live performance. Now, I'm not, by any means knocking Murray Yeston's excellent and clever score, I'm just saying that NINE is not the most musical of musicals. It has some great songs, but one doesn't necessarily appreciate them as much at home, on the CD player as they would in the theater.
So, if that's the case, how can I still give this 5 stars? There are two simple reasons.
The first is the fact that, while I have said that this is not the most musical of musicals, it makes for electrifying live theater and is musical theater of the highest caliber. If it's hummable tunes you are looking for, stick with SOUTH PACIFIC, but if you want a show that will really stay with you, this is the one. And while I'm holding my breath, in vain, for a DVD to be released of this performance, I must say that much of the drama and intensity transfers fairly well onto CD. If I can find flaws easily in Yeston's music, his lyrics are, in my opinion, sheer perfection.
The second reason for my 5-star rating is the star-studded cast. NINE was not merely a vehicle for the Broadway debut of Antonio Banderas. All across the board, this cast is terrific.
Speaking of Banderas, it's time he is taken seriously as an actor. Yes, he gets a lot of flack for making some poor films (and, perhaps, for marrying Melanie Griffith), but, his portrayal of Guido Contini here proves that Banderas can do it all. Since this review is of the CD, I must focus on his singing, which is quite excellent. Though his accent is heavy at times, Banderas sings passionately throughout the entire disc, perfectly capturing the many facets and moods of this troubled, but lovable, character. Having seen this production live, I must say that as an actor and dancer, he was thoroughly convincing and quite moving, at times.
And how could one not be moved when surrounded by such a talented supporting cast? The lovely Jane Krakowski of ALLY MCBEAL fame clearly deserved the Tony-award that she won here for her sexy portrayal of Guido's mistress. Mary Stuart Masterson may have seemed, initially, as an odd choice for the role of Guido's wife, Luisa, but she does an exceptional job here and she has a terrific singing voice. Laura Benanti is appropriately sensual and thrilling as Claudia, a sort of muse to Guido.
Special mention must be made to the legendary Chita Rivera, who has been performing on Broadway since the 1950's. As Lillian LeFleur, Guido's demanding producer, she is as thrilling and as exciting as ever. She is truly a rare talent.
All in all, this is an excellent CD that captures what has come to be a terrific and well-received revival of a uniquely entertaining musical. It is rare that a cast this talented gets assembled for a show on Broadway these days. What a treat, indeed!
