Free Music Notes for From the Muddy Banks of the WishkahFree Music Review: A trip down NIRVANA's era!!! Hit: 5 Stars
This album has some of my favorite nirvana songs on it. It may even be just as good (if not, better) than "unplugged". If you've ever heard nirvana live, you'd probably think they sound pretty bad, but this is some nirvana's best live stuff. Here are the songs:Intro: 7:10 I skip right over this, always. School: 10/10 A pretty good song off "Bleach". It's a great song to begin the album with. Drain you: 9/10 A pretty good song, but Kurt's voice gets aggravating after a while. The studio version ("Nevermind") is much better. Aneurysm: 10/10 This version is probably just as good as in the studio. It's a lot louder, and it gives you that live feel. Smells like teen sprit: 10/10 Of course, this song is on here. This version is much faster, and I like the way the bass is distorted during the solo. Been a son: 10/10 Out of the 3 versions this song has (Incesticide, muddy banks, Greatest hits), I think this is the best take. Lithium: 9/10 Not quite as good as the studio version, but getting there. Silver: 9/10 Kurt's voice is all messed up during the begging, it is still okay. It is also much faster. Spank thru: 10/10 This is the one "Unrealeased" song on the album. Don't be turned off by the western beggining!!! If you can manage to download the studio version, that is also great. Scentless apprentace: 10/10 I actually like this more than the "In Utero" version. Heart shaped box: 9/10 This isn't as good as the studio, but I like the chorus effects during the solo. Milk it: 9/10 if I would have reviewed this any earlier, I would have given it a 6, but I got into it after a while. Neg. Creep: 9/10 Another great song from "Bleach". Notice he says "Daddy's little girl" instead of "Johnny's little girl" on this version. Polly: 10/10 I think this is better than the "New wave" version (Incesticide), but not quite as good as the slow version (Nevermind). By the way, is this song even live? Why isn't anyone clapping??? Breed: 9/10 That distorted bass on the "Nevermind" version gets on my nerves, so I like this version a little better. By the way, Chad Channing plays drums on "Polly" and "Breed" just to let you know. Tourette's: 10/10 Kurt really is saying lyrics! This version is also a little longer than the "In Utero" version. Blew: 10/10 This is actually much better than on "Bleach". I like the drumming too (by Dave Grohl, not Chad Channing). A great way to end the album. Overall, get this album if you have every other album and are afraid to hear them live, and you're afraid you won't like it (thats what I did), buy it anyway. You won't regret it.
Free Music Review: A great live album all in all Hit: 5 Stars
People put down "From The Muddy Banks" because it's not one big live show. But, the songs do blend well together contrary to what some people think. Nirvana put out so much emotion into these songs. I'll give a song by song review since each song deserves it: 1. Intro: If you're having a bad day, crank this up and scream along with it. 2. School- Better than the version on Bleach in my opinion. Very hardcore and raspy. 3. Drain You- Much more hardcore than the version on Nevermind. It's just as good or better. 4. Aneurysm- Better than the Incesticide version. Much heavier and complex guitar work. 5. Smells Like Teen Spirit- a good version of it but the original captures more emotion and sounds better with studio tweaks and tune-ups. 6.Been A Son- Very sloppy vocals. Album version better. It' s ok though. 7. Lithium- Very powerful and raw performance. Great! 8. Sliver- Tuned down to low and the vocals can't match the lowness. 9. Spank Thru- a song not many people have heard. It's better live than recorded for a demo. Great song. 10. Scentless Apprentice- Powerful intro but it goes downhill after that. Not enough power screams. 11. Heart Shaped Box- the vocals are better on In Utero. Kurt should've cleared his throat before he did this one. And the guitar is also kind of sloppy. 12. Milk It- This version isn't that great but it still sounds ok if you loved the original Milk It. 13. Breed- A mediocre slopfest. This shouldn't have been included. Vocals aren't that good except for in the chorus and the guitar is too all over the place. 14. Polly- Very loud and hardcore version of Polly. It rocks! 15. Tourette's- I like this version better than the studio version. His screaming sounds better live for it. And the guitar solo is extended. 16. Blew- This song sounds great raised an octave higher. I also love the solo they threw in. A great rocking performance. All in all, "From The Muddy Banks" succeeds more than it fails so get this if you are a Nirvana fan who appreciates what they did. This was the first nirvana album I ever got and I loved it. I guarantee satisfaction. Those people who only like the backstreet boys should beware though. This is punk/alternative/rock/grunge at it's best and hardest.
Free Music Review: Because I'm optimistic... Hit: 5 Stars
Because I'm optimistic, I get to notice all or as much as I can please, help myself, dwell, etcetera. I get to notice Kurt Cobain's feelings in each of his songs and those feelings didn't feel good while others WERE STILL NIRVANA and that's exactly what Kurt Cobain tried to maintain.
If you were optimistic, you'd have a lot of fun! This album is really really awesome! I miss it now that I let my sister borrow it. The more optimistic you are, the more positive reflections you'll have and I am very very jumpy with this album!
Feel it's freshness, awesome power, Nirvana feelings from Lithium, orgasmic feeling from "MILK IT", it's tough, "I can make you do THINGS YOU WON'T THINK YOU EVER, YOU WON'T THINK YOU EVER COULD" from "Spank Thru", ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS!
Sure, maybe it's more true to also notice everything about the music and to understand how much Kurt was trying so much to sing over all of the dirt inside of him... He actually tried to much, he should've took a big break. He hurted himself for trying to hard that's why his career was short... I'm so sorry for Kurdt Kobain. I wish I could've advised him to take long breaks and relaxed.
The most I can give Kurt Cobain is that HE WAS A GREAT GREAT AWESOME FIRECRACKER! EVEN IF IT WENT AND POPPED SO NEATO BUT ENDED SO SOON..., IT ROCKED OVER MANY MANY BANDS AND BELIEVE IT! Become optimistic! You'll discover more life in life and Nirvana is "the" awesome that you may experience in Heaven so notice it!
By the way, singing "Milk It" in the shower, made my head feel floaty! There is seriously something Kurt achieved in his music.
Kurt, Kurdt D. Kobain, you should've noticed that your "last minute song writings" were actually the keys to great succession. Spending a long time on one thing could help but you should've been optimistic with the talented technique you were using! Live freely now.
Free Music Review: Just as essential as MTV Unplugged... Hit: 5 Stars
The main gripe with this album seems to be its sloppy playing or its track selection. Yes, the versions of 'Breed' and 'Heart-Shaped Box' are a little off. Maybe the studio version of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was better. 'Scentless Apprentice' may not have had the same quality vocals as the studio version. That was intended by Grohl and Novoselic. Unplugged was a GREAT release. Just about every magazine and music website recommends that you own it. It was very polished but it was very downbeat; 'Muddy Banks...' is the exact opposite. It's full of life, it's sloppy, it's LOUD, it's what Nirvana should be remembered as. Nirvana didn't break into the music industry as a depressing, acoustic band to touch our hearts. They were faster, louder, more emotional, and better than all that worthless pop that dominated the charts in the early 90s. Dave Grohl and Kris Novoselic wanted Nirvana to be remembered like that, and they did a great job of it. As for the song selection - maybe it wasn't what everyone wanted. There's no such thing as a perfect compilation cd. I'm sure lots of people wanted a live version of 'Rape Me' or a better version of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' 'In Bloom' would've been great and maybe some more tracks from 'In Utero.' Unreleased stuff would've ben equally as nice! The song selection on here is a good representative selection of (except for a couple songs) Nirvana, including mostly uncommercial songs like 'Negative Creep' and 'Milk It' (meaning people who only liked 'Teen Spirit' won't like this release a whole lot except for that one song). THIS IS ESSENTIAL Nirvana material, anybody who says otherwise is wrong. Oh, and check out that punked-out electric version of 'Polly.'
Free Music Review: Owned it 3 half years and I still love it. Hit: 5 Stars
This is my favourite Nirvana CD. I know I know, it's a compilation. But it is their best CD. Released after the death of Kurt Cobain, this compilation was put together by bassist Chris Novoselic as a tribute to him (drummer Dave Grohl may have had something to do with it as well, I don't know), and most probably because he realised that Nirvana hadn't released a live album before anyway (other than Unplugged). I'm not really a fan of Nirvana that much anymore and I don't often crank this record up, but when I do I remeber how it was one of the first heavy CDs I ever bought. Yeah, I know it's grunge and not metal, but to me it WAS metal, and it paved the way (for me at least) to become a fan of bands such as Iron Maiden, Entombed, Slayer and all that. There are some sorely missed ommissions in my opinion. "No unheard gems to add to the catalog"? What crap. Territorial Pissings, Love Buzz, About A Girl, Aero Zeppelin, Rape Me all deserve to be on this CD, but hey, you can't have it all. I adore every single song on this CD. My copy of the album has been on numourous school trips, holidays and boring visits to relatives (where it was my only source of enjoyment other than food), and to this day it remains to be one of the oldest yet one of the greatest CDs in my collection. Every time I hear this I feel that Cobain was cut down in his prime. Technically, there may have been better guitarist and singers. In terms of songwriting, there may have been more advanced musicians. But personality? In many ways that counts for a lot. He will be badly missed for years to come.
