Three Nirvana albums have achieved deservedly legendary status. First off is their legendary second album, Nevermind, which requires no further introduction: I like it enough to give it four stars, but I think it's the weakest of their "classic three". Next is obviously this one, and third is my personal favorite, Unplugged in New York (Who'd have guessed something MTV endorsed could've ended up that good?) This is one of the most honest albums I've ever heard, rivaling only John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band and Joni Mitchell's Blue. It's almost shocking how Cobain bares his soul on songs like the beautiful but depressing All Apologies (one of their best), the forceful hard rocker Serve the Servants, and the haunting, tension-building Heart Shaped Box, with one of the strangest videos I've ever seen. Kurt constantly lashes out against his fame (Pennyroyal Tea, another great track), and while sometimes the lyrics are frankly disturbing (the controversial R*pe Me; the uber-heavy Scentless Apprentice; the lingering Dumb, with prominent cello, with Cobain mentioning sniffing glue in an eerie detached, almost bored tune), they're still powerful - so are the melodies. There is a bit of humor found on this mostly dark album, in the form of the underproduced, feedback-drenched, Bleach-like Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle (great title!) and the cynical, twisted take on grunge Radio Friendly Unit Shifter: both are excellent additions to the Nirvana catalog. And the sheer burst of anger and frustration we call Tourette's is kind of tough to listen to - its "lyrics" are just barking, screaming, and well... things related to Tourette's Syndrome, but it sure sounds cool. A couple songs are rather thin: Very Ape has cool anti-macho man lyrics but a rather poor melody; and Milk It is a rather generic dynamic-shiftin' grungeapalooza, but it's hard to deny the staying power of this one - and Nirvana in general. I'm not too fond of most the groups they inspired, but blaming Nirvana for Green Day is like blaming Jimi Hendrix for hair metal. Albums as honest as this don't come around too often, and when they do, they deserve all the praise they can get.

This audiophile quality vinyl edition has been mastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analogue master tapes and pressed on 180 gram vinyl at RTI. Includes original dust sleeve art on insert.Overwhelmed by sudden success, Nirvana promised to take a harsher, more abrasive route on their second major-label release. Enlisting Chicago-based noise maven Steve Albini (of Big Black fame), Kurt Cobain and company succeeded in producing a record that was violent, disillusioned, and deeply moving. Every song reads like a commentary on the cost of fame ("Serve the Servants") and the unhealthy relationship between performer and fan ("Milk It"). Of course, they might all simply be about Courtney Love. Gossip aside, there is no denying the sheer power of Cobain's songwriting, his singing, and the band's amazing, visceral power. Cobain even manages a John Lennon-like mantra at the end of the heart-wrenching "All Apologies." "All in all is all we are," he intones repeatedly, only for Cobain that's no consolation. --Percy Keegan
