Free Music Notes for Will the Circle Be Unbroken (30th Anniversary Edition)Free Music Review: A Bluegrass work of art! Hit: 5 Stars
In 1971, the boys of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band got together with some of the all-time greats of Country music (including Earl Scruggs, Mother Maybelle Carter, Merle Travis, Roy Acuff and others), and produced a three record album that was one of the greatest Bluegrass Country music albums ever made. Some thirty years later, this album has been re-released on two CDs, with four bonus tracks (three are dialogue and the other is the Bluegrass classic, Foggy Mountain Breakdown). This is a great CD collection. The music is absolutely wonderful to listen to, a real work of art, sure to be enjoyed by any Bluegrass fan. Though the title might suggest that this is a collection of religious songs, in fact only a few are overtly religious, while most are simply Bluegrass tunes played by real experts. I loved listening to this album, and highly recommend it to you!
Free Music Review: Collaboration of NGDB and Some Legendary Musicians of Country/Bluegrass Hit: 5 Stars
This album features the famed collaboration of the Nitty Gritty Dirt with some of the all time greats of bluegrass and country music. NGDB's contributions are terrific. But it is really the playing and singing of Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, Earl Scruggs, Mother Maybelle Carter and others that stands out for me. As much as this record is adored by long time fans, it would also be an excellent introduction to someone new to country and bluegrass, as it features so many of the classic songs - "Keep On The Sunnyside", "Tennessee Stud", "Orange Blossom Special" and many others. But actually some of my personal favorites are lesser known gems such as "Way Downtown" (terrific performance by Doc Watson!)and "Losin' You". Dedicated fans of bluegrass/country, along with curious newcomers, aren't going to find anything better. So buy this record!
Free Music Review: Country Music 101...Required Listening Hit: 5 Stars
Wow! What can one add to John McEuen's review? This is a landmark album and the 30th anniversary edition only got better with the digitally remastering job and the addition of the bonus material. This marks my fourth purchase of this seminal recording. First on vinyl in 1972, then on cassette and CD, and now this. The NGDB said it best in their liner notes: "The Circle stands as a record of an event of unusual proportions, a presentation of music that 'did' change the world." Time has not diminished how special this recording is. For me personally it was an introduction to some of country and bluegrass music's most influential artists.[It's worth noting that it's this album's version of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" that was recently listed by CMT as one of the 100 greatest country songs of all time!] ESSENTIAL
Free Music Review: 30 years and still as sweet. Hit: 5 Stars
I bought the LP of Circle 30 years ago. My Professor in music appreciation class played us a song from it and I couldn't wait to get to the music store in town, buy it and take it home to play for my Dad. We used to listen to the Grand Ol Opry on the radio. We knew all the Nashville artists. Who were these kids? This Nitty Gritty Dirt Band? They bridged the gap to prove Blugrass was Universal. The music does something to your heart. Puts a smile on your face and peace in your soul. Over the years, I've often thought about replacing my LPs when the Cd appeared in the store, now I'm glad I resisted the urge. The remastered version is sweet and clean. As for the artist's comments before the songs, I love them, makes me feel closer to the talent that will be very hard to duplicate in the future.
Free Music Review: Not enough stars for this one Hit: 5 Stars
Anyone interested in building a collection of American music cannot miss this classic meeting of 2 generations of authentic country singers and pickers. I first heard this back in the 70's and was delighted to see this addition available on CD. The virtuosity of these musicians cannot be disputed and the playing here is at times just astounding. I love every track but particularly those featuring Doc Watson. Vassar Clement's fiddling consistently amazes. The selection of tunes is so well balanced featuring a great combination of vocal talent and instrumentals. I could go on and on about this collection but the bottom line is this is a must own for any serious music collector whether or not country is your thing. This is the real deal!
