Free Music Review: "This Is Not the Usual 'No Doubt' Release, but it Works!" Hit: 5 Stars
For those fans who are ONLY looking for "Tragic Kingdom Part 2" should skip right past No Doubt's latest release. "Rock Steady" is the band's most experimental release to date, pushing away from a hard-core ska base onto a more radio-friendly, electronica/reggae/techno level. While listening to "Rock Steady," you can definately recognize the usual No Doubt vibe, but this album gives your ears more twists and turns that many fans of "Trapped in A Box" and "Don't Speak" will not appreciate to the max.The album begins with an "Intro" which lays down the chorus for the title track on the album. Then, "Hella Good," one of the most catchy, energetic tracks on the album pumps through your speakers. "Hella Good" is some of No Doubt's best work to date, and its chorus remains in your head all day long. Other tracks that follow the footsteps of "Hella Good" are "Making Out," "Detective," and "In My Head." The new single, "Hey Baby," foreshadows the new album perfectly because it mixes pop-influenced beats with R&B influenced vocals. Since Gwen teamed up with rapper Eve for the amazing track "Let Me Blow Your Mind," it shows that her musical tastes are diversifying and expanding to other musical genres. Gwen's duet with Moby, "South Side," shows her choice to dive into the electronica wave that has captured many artists such as Madonna and Janet Jackson. I have a lot of respect for bands who aren't afraid to experiment with their music to remain fresh. It is not condsidered "selling out," but an opportunity to branch out and experience new types out music while keeping an original sound as a basis. No Doubt is a perfect example of a band who can shine through many different musical tastes. Even though the whole album is worth a complete listen, songs like the Ric Ocasek produced "Don't Let Me Down" and the title track, "Rock Steady," are incredible, along with the others I listed above. However, the best song on the album is "Waiting Room," a duet with Prince which has the whole package. Its techno-influenced beats make the track one you can dance to, and it gives Gwen the opportunity to expand her vocal range unlike ever before. Both Gwen and Prince collide together and connect perfectly on this track, and the chorus is incredibly catchy. Once again, "Rock Steady" is simply a unique album for No Doubt that can do no wrong. The energy that the whole band holds throughout each song is unlike any of their other efforts. Even though both "Tragic Kingdom" and "Return of Saturn" are solid releases, I believe this album is the epitomy of No Doubt's best musical work to date. This style is unlike the two albums before "Tragic Kingdom," too, but it is definately talent-influenced music. If you are a No Doubt fan and OPEN-MINDED, do not be afraid. "Rock Steady" will give you everything you need to quench your "No Doubt fix" and then some. However, if you only like the band for their previous efforts, then remain thirsty and wait for the new Limp Bizkit CD.
Free Music Review: "A real love survives; a rock steady vibe." Hit: 5 Stars
What can I start off with? No Doubt, one of the best bands of all time, has released their fifth studio album and it's exactly what everyone wanted. No Doubt went into a new direction once again, with some of their some of their old trademarks as well.First, No Doubt shoots you into their world with the introduction to Rock Steady. We haven't seen a No Doubt intro since their debut album back in 1992. Next up is "Hella Good," a rock song about Gwen's lust, which is most likely the potential second single for this album. "Hey Baby," the band's current single, is about boys and girls hitting on each other backstage at No Doubt's concerts, behind a reggae/dancehall vibe. "Making Out" is self-explanatory by the title of the song. It's a disco-tinged synthpop song about the anticipation of making out with the one she loves. "Underneath It All," a reggae love song, is definitely one of the album highlights. No Doubt at one of their finest. "Detective" is a synthizer-filled tune about a distrustful lover, which is yet another highlight of Rock Steady. "Don't Let Me Down", produced by former member of the Cars, Ric Ocasak, is a new wave/punk song that everyone will love. It's got the old feel of No Doubt's songs in it (mostly "Six Feet Under" from Return of Saturn). This one was for all the fans of Return of Saturn! "Start the Fire" was an okay song. A reggae-based tune about burning your relationship and starting anew. Nice story, but the song is somehow incomplete. "Running" is another one of my favorite tracks on this album. A ballad which sounds like the band is playing in a musicbox or the song would be used on an old Nintendo game. Lovely song, which would make a great single or a great wedding song! "In My Head" was one of the tracks that I wasn't too excited about hearing when I looked at the title, but I'm so glad they put this on the LP! It's one of the best tracks, which sounds like a circus song in some parts! "Platinum Blonde Life" is a hardrock Garbage-type song, but with a touch of spice to make it simply No Doubt. This one was written for all those hard-rocking fans of Tragic Kingdom! These guys are great to us, aren't they?! "Waiting Room" is the track that No Doubt collaborated with the Artist known as Prince, which is rewritten by him in one day. I think the verses work well. I really like when Gwen sings, "You always had my number." "Rock Steady" is the final track, with yet another reggae feel. I'm starting to love this song even more everytime I listen to the album. All in all, a great album to add to your No Doubt collection and should definitely not be past up. If you're a longtime No Doubt fan, you'll love it. If you're a new fan, you'll also love it. Make sure you get this album. Though, I hope No Doubt secretly works on another masterpiece like Return of Saturn, I love Rock Steady. Like the song says... "A real love survives; a rock steady vibe."
Free Music Review: greater than great Hit: 5 Stars
Again people are downing a great cd. First of all I was hooked on "Hey Baby" when I first heard it and I decided to get the cd based on that song but when I first listened to the cd, I only liked about 2 songs. The problem with the bad reviews is that people do not give time for the album to grow on them. Now I like every single song on their.(1)Rock Steady(intro)-a good intro, made no sense at first but hearing the last track makes it good. (2)Hella Good-i could almost hear an old school madonna in gwens voice in this song. like all the songs on the cd, the beat is great and the chorus line is crazy good. (3)Hey Baby-you all know what this sounds like. this is the song with the reggae type beat to it. (4)Making Out-i hated it at first but the chorus sounds smooth but with a fast beat. (5)Underneath It All-another reggae song. gwens voice is soft througout this whole song until you get near the end and some reggae artists starts...whats the word? reggaing. (6)Detective-in my opinion i like this track but many people will hate it because it sounds a little weird. YOU MUST LISTEN TO THE SONG ALL THE WAY THROUGH. if you do that you will like the song and its weird but very good chorus line. (7)Don't let me down-nothing much i can say about this song. nothing really stands out on this one except being another good song. (8)Start the fire-this is one of the best songs on the cd. another reggae song. this is like the greatest song to play in a sound system. the bass, the vocals, the beat oh my. i just can't stop listening to this track. (9)Running-a pretty average track. nothing major in this one either. (10)Platinum Blonde Life-its alright. its my least favorite track but its still good. (11)In my head-one of two of the slowest songs on the cd (one being "Running") compared to the others its a little slower. the vocals are calm until she gets to the chorus singing "In my head" a little louder than everything else which grabs your attention right away. (12)Waiting Room-to be honest, i skipped this track within 5 seconds of it starting when i first heard it. but since i decided to listened to every track so far, why stop now. and i haven't stopped listening to this track yet. its kind of a like a club song. if they make a club remix of this song i'm buying it right away. this is one of the best tracks on the cd also. and you can hear gwen moaning near the end of the track too, unless i misheard it over and over again. you can also hear prince in the background since he also produced it.(and i'm pretty sure it wasn't him moaning. (13)Rock Steady-this is a reggae song too. i think gwen shows her voice off really well on this track. the beat even speeds up a little during the chorus. this is also one of my top songs on the cd. Overall, GOTTA HAVE IT. you have to give it to No Doubt for showing off what other talents they have. and trust me, if you like this cd you'll like the new Pink cd (which i will have a review for later)
Free Music Review: 4 1/2... The Album is back... Hit: 5 Stars
The 21st Century's answer to Fleetwood Mac, by way of Blondie and Madness, are back with this, their finest, most comprehensive collection Pop. Actually, calling this album "Pop" would defeat its very purpose: "Rock Steady" is a one-CD jukebox of sublimely catchy Post-Punk, tipping its hat towards Dub, Dancehall, synth-friendly 80's Pop, Electronica, lithe R & B, and even elements of Tropicalia. It's a VERY pretentious album, if you haven't noticed by the absurd hype, the flaunted phallanx of celebrated collaborators/producers, and the fact that, nowadays, Gwen seldom wears anything that doesn't have the album's name emblazoned on it. Nevertheless, notwithstanding my distrust of the industry-manufactured hoopla, I do believe the band pulls it off nicely, crafting what I feel is their most complete album to date, topping both their previous (increasingly better) efforts. If "Tragic Kingdom" was their "Rumours", and "Return of Saturn" their "Tunnel of Love", "Rock Steady" seems to be more complete, versatile and canonical... Gwen Stefani has practically grown into the role of SoCal's chic-est chick, much like previous LaLaLand queens Stevie Nicks, Exene Cervenka, and Belinda Carlisle, all of which (along with some Debbie Harry) Gwen echoes in "Rock Steady". The album's main shortcomings, which are mainly of the lyrical variety, are emphatically overcome by the obscene amount of hooks, and by the band's sheer professional playing within the sheeny production values of Spike Stent, The Neptunes, Sly and Robbie, Ric Ocasek, and the great Prince, whose contribution to the album, "Waiting Room", can best be described as deserving of "Sign O' the Times", complete with Sylvester-like harmonies and backing vocals by His Royal Badness himself. Ric Ocasek's deft touch with synths and guitar riffs lends a little bit of "Just What I Needed" to "Don't Let Me Down" and especially "Platinum Blonde Life", while Sly and Robbie submerge "Underneath It All"'s lyrical shortcomings under the deluge of Tony Kanal's bass-playing. Blondie's "Parallel Lines" seems to be a huge influence here, although THAT album spawned most of what No Doubt seems to be drawing on here, hence Blondie's greatness... However, the fact remains that there is nary a truly "bad" song on this album, most of which is treated as a comprehensive whole, ill-served by the invariable Greatest Hits compilations t which will follow in the next decade... In this day and age of pre-marketed paup, of thirty dozens of Orlando-bred and fed teenieboppers with no musical inkling or touch, and of twenty-five interchangeable (mediocre) rappers and Angry White Men Who Want to Rap... bands such as these, who play and write hook-laden Pop/Rock rooted in the canon, deserve high praise. High praise, indeed.
